There's nothing wrong with thinking this way. I envy Toledo as they have a strong core of alumni who are trying to figure out how to move up the ranks. If they can solve their less than stellar academics and rule violations, they could put themselves in the right position for the next set of conference shake ups. We developed a 50 year plan for the University around infrastructure and academics, we should also have a 20 year plan for football and b-ball.
When you say less than stellar academics are you referring to this?

And by rule violations you are referring to a thirty year old violation in track by a guy who is gone due to that incident? Because that's th eonly major NCAA violation we have.

But I understand the envy.
Uh oh. Be careful touting APR scores on this board. Remember, they don't mean anything, and anybody that thinks APR scores are wonderful doesn't understand that sports are all about winning. You better run.
factman wrote:It could be argued that it is easier to get high APR scores at a school with lower academic standards, and in this case it is probably true!
Yeah, I was surprised at how well BG did, too. I think their AD has a big part to play in that.

I believe that Mr. McDougle just plead GUILTY to the game fixing charges from a few years ago... Isn't this classified a "rules violation" by the NCAA? Not to mention a "crime" in civilian terms.

No, its not. Check out the "Clean Programs" thread on the MAC boards-or just check the NCAA site and you wouldn't have to ask me. It clearly shows all major rules violations for every school. And you don't want to go down the "lets' compare athletes' crimes" road. That gets incredibly boring.
I figured I'd revisit this thread now that September games are over and give revised thoughts on the remaining eight opponents.
West Virginia – Geno Smith is the real deal IMO. WVU is beatable, but to do that, Smith must be stopped. He's really mobile and, though not the scrambler by any means that White was, he's very creative with his feet and can buy lots of time to find a receiver downfield. Our defensive line will be able to get pressure on Smith, but our defensive backs will have to cover their receivers better than they've covered anybody this year to stop this offense. So far, the WVU offense has been consistent though not explosive. Give them time, and I believe that offense is going to explode.
Western Michigan – They've played really tough so far. WMU gave Michigan a way better fight than they've been credited for so far, and they gave a good Illinois team absolutely everything they could handle. WMU defensively is good though not great, but their offense is quite explosive. They're gong to be excellent on that side of the ball in MAC play. However, their QB Carder, though excellent on the field, bothers me on the sideline. When things got down at Michigan, you didn't see anything resembling leadership from him.
Toledo – These guys are hungry and desperate for a win. After playing Ohio State (not all that good Ohio State) and Syracuse (better than 06 - 09 but not by much) down to the wire and coming up short in both, they are hungry, hungry, hungry for a win. With likely a big loss to Temple coming up and a 1-4 start, two things could happen. UT could basically pack it in and feel sorry for themselves and limp to a sub .500 finish, or they could have some players step up as leaders just like we had Sheehan, Barnes, Scheidler, Sanderson, Mahone, and Brown step up in 09 when we needed it. This is a talented team that could show up to our homecoming game either mentally engaged or mentally dead.
Temple – WTF? What happened in that game against Maryland? Wow ... that was absolutely incredible. Now Maryland is really not that good, but there's no way around it, that win was impressive. Temple is a few plays from 4-0 and likely nationally ranked. I said early that Ohio was the east team to stop, but I think Temple is now. That being said, I'm still not sold on Steve Adazzio, and I don't think he's going to be an excellent coach for the long term. For this year, though, I'm a lot worried about this matchup. No way Temple sweeps the MAC. Somebody's going to beat them IMO, and it could be us.
Kent State – I expected way more out of Kent. So far, nothing has been all that great. I will need to watch them in MAC play to make a good evaluation of them.
Northern Illinois – NIU's offense has been at points excellent. Their defense ... not so much. Early I said I don't think he have a real shot in this one. I now believe this is a very winnable game. NIU hasn't showed teeth on defense, and if we can get some stops on that O with our D line play, I think we'll be fine in this one.
Ohio – OU beat themselves up against Rutgers. Though I now think Temple is the team to beat in the east, Ohio is an all around great team. Excellent coaching staff, excellent talent, good depth. We can win this one, we can definitively win this one.
Buffalo – UB started well against Pitt, but nothing's really worked well for them since. They basically didn't bother playing a bad UConn team, their offense hasn't done anything noticeable yet, their D has been ok but now great. What I said before regarding their coach is still pretty accurate. I’m still not sure what I think of their coach Quinn. He was magic at Cincinnati, but now that he’s a head coach, he has looked a bit lost. We absolutely should win this game.
The MAC has all around been pretty good so far. This conference top to bottom is far better than last year IMO. Ohio, Temple, Miami, BG, Toledo, WMU, NIU, and Ball State have all had their moments so far this season. That stretch beginning with beating Miami up to the Temple game is rough, rough, rough. If we come out of that stretch still undefeated in MAC play, go ahead and start booking tickets for Detroit. If we come out with one loss in MAC play, we're still definitely in it. Should be a tough but fun October and November of football!

I think we need to beat Temple. Right now I don't see them dropping 2 games. Ohio is decent but they will stumble a couple times I would think. NIU really has not impressed me. They beat Army by a bunch and played Kansas close but neither of those games impressed me. Army and Kansas stink and they did nothing to impress anyone against Wisconsin.
I agree completely with MarkL, the Temple and Ohio games are the really critical ones...maybe Toledo too just because of the rivalry and the fact that they fall within a stretch of tough games. But in all honesty, if we just beat Temple and Ohio, I can hardly imagine a scenario in which we don't end up in the MACC. Kent State and Buffalo are awful and I'd say those games are pretty much in the bag for us. Even if we were to somehow lose one of those, neither of those teams is a threat to get north of .500 in the MAC. You know Akron isn't going to be contending, they might not win a game in conference. Miami is already down a game and isn't looking as strong as I thought. That leaves OU and Temple as our competition, and I think either of them has a good chance at winning 7 games in the MAC.
We win those games on October 22 and November 16, we're going to Detroit.

Looking at our roster...particulalrly on defense...if you want to beat us, you better do it this year because we are going to be tough in 2012 and 2013.
That said... I agree completely that Temple and OU are critical games because they're "2 game" contests...a win for us and a loss for our divisional rivals. We play the toughest teams in the west in NIU, WMU and UT. Beat Toledo and I'm happy...beat Toledo and NIU and I'm giddy...beat all three and I'll eat a bug...
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

You could make the case that Ball State is right in that mix out west too. But yeah, EMU and CMU are bad, its a shame we don't face them...to say nothing of Akron, who we'd probably beat 63-7.

Don't tell that to the players on the team. For a team with so many freshmen and sophomores, they need to focus 100% on the next opponent. As far as they need to be concerned, the next opponent each and every week is the only opponent left on the schedule and BG is in for a battle with a team that is capable of winning. I sure hope nobody on the team or the staff is viewing any game as a gimme game.
