Re: Women's World Cup
I usually pay attention to soccer once every four years for the men's World Cup. I did tune in to the second half yesterday, however and was pulling hard for the women's team.
This is big news here in Rochester, given that Abby Wambach is a local. In the six-degrees of separation category, Princess Byron's science teacher last year is Abby's sister.

Re: Women's World Cup
That was an amazing game! I finally got to watch my recording, and since the game went into overtime, I didn't get to watch the entire thing. Thankfully, espn3.com had a replay of the game, so I fast forwarded into the extra time.
First off, we got away with a handball earlier in the game. But then, that red card was crap because the player wasn't actually taken out. Then, Solo stayed on the line to block that penalty free kick after the red card (nothing says you can't shuffle back and forth along the line itself). But, the referee seemed to be hoping for Brazil to win. I'm just glad she was fair and called the Brazil keeper for leaving her line on the first save in the penalty kicks after the game. She was getting pretty close to the end of the goal box by the time the kick was taken. In fact, every kick involved that keeper coming forward off her line, but we were just able to put the ball outside her reach.
I must say, Marta is a fantastic player, and the fact that she's been player of the year for the past 5 years makes perfect sense. Very well deserved.
Next up is France. This has been an exciting World Cup.

UT fans were pulling for Columbia. Natalia Gaitan of the Rockets plays for their national team.

Re: Women's World Cup
Awesome game...most exciting Women's game I've ever seen. The own goal at the beginning was a blessing and the fact that we were able to come back the way we did with that header and only 10 players on the field was absolutely amazing! Hope Solo is awesome.

Why would University of Tennessee fans care that a Toledo player was on the Columbia National Teamh2oville rocket wrote:UT fans were pulling for Columbia. Natalia Gaitan of the Rockets plays for their national team.

Ah, good one- but I never said there was a cause-effect relationship. Who can account for the vagaries of Vol fans tastes?
Re: Women's World Cup
USA loses to JAPAN in the World Cup final. Was probably the best and most exciting soccer game I ever watched.
USA loses in penalty kicks after Japan ties it up with less than 5 minutes remaining in extended time. USA could not do anything in the penalty kicks. Still a great World Cup

Re: Women's World Cup
First time ever USA has lost a World Cup match when leading with less than 20 min remaining in the game. I think they said they won 26 straight matches when leading. What a heartbreak.

Horrible penalty kicks- looked more like my 11-12 groups of years ago.
