Greeting from a Wyoming fan

Post by DCPoke »

Just wanted to stop by and say "howdy" to all the Falcon fans. I was planning on coming to this year's game, but I scored a pair of tickets to Wyoming's home game with Nebraska so I was forced to choose. Last year I made the trip from Northern Virginia (NOVA), about an 8-hour drive, to see my Pokes play Toledo. From the map, it looks like Bowling Green is 25-30 miles south of Toledo. I expect there to be about 500 Wyoming fans out for the game, about what showed up for Toledo.

Anyway, I'll catch the game on the internet, unless it gets televised by someone we can get back in NOVA.

One interesting aspect of the game is that our new offensive coordinator, Gregg Brandon , was your old head coach. This actually marks the second stint for Gregg at UW. He was our receivers coach from 1987 through the 1990 season. Also, our head coach, Dave Christensen, was formerly Toledo's OC back with Pinkel was their head coach. Small world.

So, here's wishing for a good game with no injuries. May the best Pokes, er, man win... :-D

Yeah, I caught that. My bad. I was rushing to get the post done. Fixed it.

Well, when he brought the Falcons out to Laramie in '08 he kicked our ass 45-16. I can blame our old coach for that...

Welcome to the board!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

And technically, Toledo is about 25-30 miles north of Bowling Green. But why quibble over details?

When we were at the Glass Bowl last year, there fan told us about the Nike rocket they have mounted outside the north end zone. We were told they have it aimed at the 50-yard line of Doyt Perry Stadium. That doesn't concern you?... :-D

Question is, what do you have pointed at them?

it's a "scud" and couldn't hit us anyway! They need a new compass if they think it is aimed at BG. :)

That is true---and we haven't seen 20 points a game (never mind 45 points) since he has gone. Also, that same year we beat you guys 45-16 at your place didn't you guys go to Tennessee and win 10-7 as 28 point underdogs? Our new coach- Clawson--was the offensive coordinator that year for Tennessee....hmmmmm.... have fun with coach Brandon as your offensive coordinator. He gets the most out of nothing.

Ya know, now that I think about it.........Tennessee beat Vanderbilt in 2008........Vanderbilt beat Ole Miss in 2008..........Ole Miss beat Florida in 2008!!!!!

I guess we should have been named national champions in 2008!!!! [/sarcasm]

Brandon was good for about one or two impressive victories a year, and they were usually out of conference. After 2003, the impressive victory per year progressively became more and more lack-luster. Combine that with never winning a MAC championship, blowing many critical games, stupid comments to the press, an APR spiraling out of control, off the field problems........

Why do I have to keep posting a reminder of why Brandon got fired?

I dont know...GB did some really good things here and he always struck me as a pretty good guy personally...but it was becoming pretty clear that the academic, off field and retention issues were going to make it really really difficult to match the early success. We were on the road to becoming at best, a perrenial 5-7, 6-6, 7-5 kind of program. Fine...those numbers are better than 2-10, but I'll take a 2-10 year every now and then if it means the foundation for real success has been built. I lived trough the mid to late 90s Gary Blackney years...I wouldn't want to go through that again...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I like Gregg Brandon, he's a great guy, he came up with some excellent on the field moments, and he got a ton out talent which got overlooked. I still believe he deserved at least one more year to prove he could be the right guy to coach the team off the field.

That being said, if I could go back to the coaching search in 2009, I'd still pick Dave Clawson. We hired him to be the HEAD COACH, not the OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. As a head coach, he's been nothing but successful; he's turned programs around that had hit rock bottom. This is not an easy process. His days at Tennessee may mar him a bit, but keep in mind that many people around that program said there were too many hands on the steering wheel in terms of the offense. Fulmer wouldn't give Clawson proper control to be an offensive coordinator; he treated him more as an offensive adviser.

I 100% believe this team is going to be way, way better than expectations. Not sure why, but I'm just getting a similar feeling that I did starting the 2007 season when we walked into Minneapolis and knocked off the Gophers en route to turning it around from 4-8 to 8-4 and the hottest team in the conference at the end of the regular season. I've got that feeling so much that if the opener were Saturday instead of Thursday, I'd be going to Expedia right now to order some plane tickets into and out of Pullman, WA!

They like to talk about their missile, we like to talk about the all-time series record. :-D
