Re: The 2011 Cleveland Indians
Here is where we will really see what this team is made of. Will they get their azzes up of the mat and win these games that they should or do they pack it in and start planning their off-season vacations? Seattle is awful. We MUST beat them.

And Cleveland loses to Seattle, 3-2. Now 5.5 games back tied with ChiTown...ugh.

And Hafner now back on the DL. Indians almost have to win out this week against "inferior?" competition. The Tigers have a tough stretch of 6 more road games this week with 3 being in Tampa against really good pitching.

Re: The 2011 Cleveland Indians
A lot of talk in the Cleveland area about picking up Jim Thome from the waiver wire to take on Hafner's role for the time being. Would be a HUGE boon for attendance down the stretch too. Brantley's wrist is hurting again so he won't be playing for the next few days...It's going to be a loooooong day. I smell two losses in this double header.

If Thome were still going for 600 maybe, but I can't see bringing in an old broken down slugger being a HUGE boon...even for a good guy like Thome.

I think you don't realize how much Cleveland misses Thome. He was our man. He wanted to stay. Dolan wouldn't pay him. He would have worn Chief Wahoo for his entire career if they would have let him.

I understand...but I just don't see fans flocking to the ball park just to see him wind down his career.
Anyway, the tribe just pulled another one out of the asses with a 9th inning home run.

I call bullshit. If he wanted to stay, he could have stayed. He wasn't traded. He left as a free agent. Yes, Dolan didn't want to pay him big money. Thome still could have signed in Cleveland for whatever they were offering. He didn't. He chose to sign with Philadelphia. The Indians paid him basically $8 mil per year his last four years in Cleveland. That's not chump change.VDub26Falcon wrote:He wanted to stay. Dolan wouldn't pay him. Re: The 2011 Cleveland Indians
It wasn't the money that was the issue. The Indians offered him a slew of benefits including post-career stuff (statue, $250,000 for 10 years if he's a first ballot hall-of-famer, family suit for 5 years after retirement, etc. (you can read about that in "Dealing" by Terry Pluto)) but all he really wanted was a No-Trade clause. Dolan refused to give him one. He wanted to be able to bail out of the contract if the team tanked. I used to hold a huge grudge against Thome. I'm over it.

Bringing back Lofton in 2007 put a spark in attendance but they were able to do that earlier in the summer.Redwingtom wrote:I understand...but I just don't see fans flocking to the ball park just to see him wind down his career.

Re: The 2011 Cleveland Indians
I'm sticking with bullshit on that too. It makes no sense. Thome: "I want to play in Cleveland, but if you wont guarantee that I will play here for my entire contract, than I won't play here at all." If he truly wanted to stay, he could have signed without the no-trade and just hoped for the best.VDub26Falcon wrote:It wasn't the money that was the issue. And I specifically remember Thome saying he went to Philadelphia because they had the best chance of getting to the playoffs and winning a championship.

But I agree that it is over. Too many injuries all year for the Tribe to overcome. Sizemore (twice), Choo, now Hafner and Kipnis as he was finding his groove, and Brantley's aching wrist. Just not meant to be.
