East Coast Falcons, strap in, here comes Irene

Post by 1987alum »

Forecast keeps pushing the storm further west and, right now, the Philly area is looking at a major soaking and some powerful winds. We've already been flooded twice this month - the ground is saturated and we've got a nasty string of storms coming in tonight, too.

So, Noah & I will be sandbagging the garage Friday and making other preparations.

What are other East Coast Falcons doing in advance of Irene?

I live in Baltimore. I'm not too worried personally, but anybody south of us, like especially along the VA and NC coasts, be seriously careful.

I lived through one of those when I lived in Fayetteville. I learned you definitely take them seriously.

Friends lost power for almost a week, my place was the only one with power so we had everyone unload refrigerators and freezers, put a lot of food in ice coolers and we were eating steaks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that week. My water bill was sky high that month with about 8 or 9 of us showering daily and doing laundry, but we had a good time.

Today is prep day.

Noah and I have already cleared the backyard of potential projectiles and gotten everything off the garage floor. The sump pump is in place at the end of the driveway and after lunch, we'll be placing sandbags in front of the garage. We're also going to experiment with a makeshift barrier at the end of the driveway.

The morning update moved the track a bit to the east, which is good. The further east, the better.

Good luck to you '87. Looks like it's heading right for NYC. This has the potential to be a big mess. I'm glad we're just getting wind. . .

The sump pump is at the end of the driveway and sandbags are against the gararge:

Tomorrow, we stack sandbags across the end of the driveway.

Latest forecast calls for 10 inches of rain in the Philly area, winds more than 74 mph. We'll start feeling Irene's impact tomorrow afternoon; the worst of the storm will hit overnight into Sunday morning.

Strapping in ...

I spent part of my day down in DC and drove back up to Baltimore. The drive down was really, really dark with clouds. The drive back north was insane with all that rain coming down. Seriously be careful out there folks if you live in the area.

Bowling Green PR? I listened twice and didn't hear anything about BG. Am I missing something?

I spent Saturday morning on the golf couse at a private Philadelphia area golf club. Nothing like getting in 18 holes by noon time. This morning, our only noticable damage was our Verizon cable wire on the ground, but as you can read by this post, we didn't lose the communication ability.

Look closely at the Subway signs on the orange tile wall. ..

We made it through the worst of Irene without any trouble. Never took on water, really, just enough to soak a small hand towel.

Then, this morning, long after the storm had cleared, the power went out.

And the electric company says it could be more than a week before we get it back.

* sigh *
