I have to say that I find a number of the comments very interesting. Since the State Architect's Office was not real consistent in terms of design with the major growth in the 60's, they did get up a number of ugly buildings. There is no doubt about that. However, now that there is some effort to upgrade the level of some of the architecture, there seems to be some concern raised about maintaining consistency with whatever is in the area, no matter how poor that architecture might be. I firmly believe that with some of the new designs, the overall feel of campus will improve. I also believe that if you listen to how the building designs were approached, you would find connections in every case, even if the direction or thought was for a purposeful contrast to those around it.

When the new dining hall at McDonald is completed (just don't look at the back of it), and Mac East is cleaned up, it opens up a wonderful green space between the new dining hall and Overman, really improving a standard pathway. It also will serve as another green space to continue to tie green spaces together across campus, and up to the new Falcon Heights. There is no doubt that the original core of campus was well thought out, and the proportions are classic, however, there was a stretch where things just got put where they could, or to meet some immediate, pressing needs. I am very hopeful that some of the new structures and other changes will help ties things back together. The ship for the traditional look of Miami sailed a long, long time ago, so let's hope for quality buildings that will help raise the level overall. And I have to admit to having a sister go to Miami, and in looking at it while selecting schools, the feel I get from that (and a few other schools I have visited) is "stuffy." I hope that we are never accused of that.

I also found the comments on B.G.'s lack of style interesting, as they sounded like what many students were saying when I was a student in the early 1970s. I remember traveling to Miami with several friends for a football game and thinking B.G. certainly didn't have the same kind of charm -- although we did win the football game. I've never been a student of architecture, but it seems to me that in the late '60s and '70s, there was more of an emphasis on functionality vs. beauty. It seems that many of the buildings that went up in that era -- whether at B.G. or elsewhere -- have not stood the test of time well. I lived in Harshmann for a couple of years, and even then, it was pretty basic. When you compare the old campus area to the area to the east in front of the library, you could be at two totally different schools.

While BGSU may not have the "prettiest" campus, what sets it apart from all the others is the people. You will not find more genuine people than at BG.

These are a few photos I snapped the other day outside of the Health Center and the Moore Musical Arts Center.

The upgrades look pretty sharp!

I was looking at the BG News online and there was a construction photo of them pulling up the bricks on the side of the Administration Building by the fountain. Can anyone tell me what they are doing there and why?

I believe I read that they are redoing that entire entrance to the admin building because it's so rundown. Not 100% sure, but sounds right.

The work in front of the Administration Building is just to clean up the mess caused by tree roots, and a tired set of pavers. It will just be a simple set of new sidewalks and some landscaping to clean it up.

There is also some clean up going on by the Fine Arts Building, behind the new Chiller Plant. This is taking out the old handball courts and putting in a sidewalk, grass and limited landscaping. Hopefully with the rework of the parking lot there, the entire area will clean up nicely - which would be nice if the art folks could keep some of their work inside the walls of their courtyard.

The new Residence Halls and Dining Halls will be getting sod put down, which will be a great improvement over the typical hydro-seed installation, and will allow some traffic on the lawns this fall.

I'd like to see them do something to cover up the ugly pipes on the fountain in front of the Admin building!! Those pipes just look tacky.

Word has it that the Master Plan calls for the Admin Building to be torn down and that end of campus opened up again. Also, President Mazey has stated that she is excited about our master plan. Not sure how many years it will take to get to this point, but the prospect is exciting!

The plan is indeed to tear down Admin - at least it was last summer.

Stopped by BG over the weekend. New residence halls look very nice and the new dining hall next to Mac looks very nice with the alternating textures of materials so prevalent in today's design.

The Wolf Center is big. Aaaaaaaaand, that's about all I can say about it. I was hesitant when I first saw the design and I'm even more so now. I like the front facia from the modernist point of view. I'll reserve judgement when it's done but the sucker is a behemoth! OhioGal called it "the beached whale" and I can't argue. It doesn't seem to fit the space but again, reserving judgement.

The redesigned corner on Ridge between MMAC and the Wolf are excellent.

I love BGs campus in that there is variety and a story with almost every building. I don't want "cohesive design" because that is wholly uninteresting. It's like living in a city where every building is alike. Blech.

Didn't we switch from a Projection Slide Machine to a Polaroid Camera?
