My Day With FB Recruit Tyler Goble

Post by fredthefalcon »

Actually I fibbed a little, it was just part of the afternoon as Goble's Plymouth HS team played Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in one of the Big Day Prep Showdown games at EMU. Both teams were coming off 2010 state runner-up finishes although 4 divisions apart. The difference proved dramatic as Plymouth beat MCC 47-13 with a running clock for most of the 4th quarter. Goble played about 3 quarters at inside LB and OT. He is obviously a LB. Looks like he has the proto typical size. He possesses good instincts including what looked to me like speed and pursuit to the outside. Goble had a ton of tackles and was a candidate for POTG but as usual a RB got the honors.

The second game of the day was competitive between two smaller schools and the big boys were going at it in the evening with 4 in the top ten. Couldn't stay past game 2 though. I did see something in the 2nd game I never saw previously in watching HS football. One of the players for Lake Fenton ran over to the band at halftime, picked up an instrument, and perfomed the entire half time show in his uniform. I can safely say when I was in school or even when my daughters were in school, that the vast majority of coaches would not even consider it. And for that matter most band directors would likely not want to have a member that misses a good percentage of marching band practice. The practice times seemed to me that they always overlapped.

Fred,
I'm surprised you haven't seen this before...I've seen it several times at HS games, usually smaller schools, but even some of the larger Cleve. area schools have done things like this, especially if their music programs aren't overally strong with 250+ kids in the band.

61, believe me I never saw this before. I marched in band for 4 years in NW Ohio (small schools) watched my daughter cheer and nephews play in Michigan (Largest Class) and a few games here and there. Not once had this happened. I believe you are correct that it would not happen a lot in the big powers. My oldest daughter's school was ultra football competitive. In fact Lloyd Carr was a head coach there at one time. Of note, on this particular day, only one of the 4 schools had a band (pep or marching) at the games.

I remember WTOL doing a story on a kid, I think at Anthony Wayne if my memory serves, back in 2007 that did this.

There were a couple kids at my high school that did this too. Granted, my high school recently snapped a 34 game losing streak, so there was about as much respect for the band as there was football.

My kids went to AW and my daughter was in the band in junior high. We went to see them march in the post game show with the HS band. Figured we'd come in as everyone was leaving after the game and snatch a good seat. No one left after the game. More people came in- both sides of the stands were packed for the post game band show.

Band is a big deal at AW and there have been kids in the band who were allowed to play football before and after the halftime show.

Rivals pegs Goble as a *** guy...so that's pretty cool.
