This loss to WMU today was just one game. It was a tough one, but it was just one. However, with that being said, it's another one in a long losing streak to both WMU and Kent State that are adding up for BG.
This was our fifth consecutive loss to WMU and our third consecutive loss at home to WMU. We have also lost 10 of our last 11 games against Kent State including four consecutive games against Kent State at home. Combined, we have lost our last seven home games against WMU and Kent State! Notice a trend?
Looking at these two series against WMU and KSU, I think WMU and KSU are two of the most athletic teams in the MAC. These are also two of the better teams in our league in recent years and we have struggled mightily against both of them and I feel our biggest downfall has been we haven't had the personnel to match up with either team down the stretch. I feel like we have a good team on our hands this year, but I still think we lack the horses that teams like WMU and KSU seem to have lately.
BG's lack of athleticism shows against WMU & KSU
In respect to WMU, one thing they have over us is SIZE. I don't mean just height, they are some wide, strong bodies. We never have anybody like that. Josh is a big kid, but is just skinny. Lefeld is big, but just plain soft. Wright looks like he could be blown over by the wind just walking across campus. Reed , Rost, Reitz all are solid, muscle-bound guys. Why can't we ever get a horse like that to bang around underneath?

Man I hope so. I think WMU's basketball team could have kicked their football team's butt in a game of football. Seems like every team we play I say to myself "that guy should be playing football". I've never thought that about any BG players. Except when Cole and Keon were playing.

It was Western's size and strength that killed us today, not their athleticism. I think they are a middle-of-the-road team athletically, but they have very skilled basketball players and a good coach. I thought Eastern was more athletic on Wednesday night, but they didn't have good basketball players. It comes down to shooting with our team. We don't have the most athletic guys in the world, but we can really shoot the ball. If shots don't fall, we won't win.
I thought our guys did a great job against a much bigger WMU team. I agree with ya, BGGrad01, if we'd had a couple shots that normally fall go in, we would have been right there.BGGrad01 wrote: It comes down to shooting with our team. That was a recruiting class that we were all really excited about too. My how things change when they get on campus, eh?orangeandbrown wrote:Wow, don't get the whole Austin Montgomery thing started again....
What was that recruiting class? Hobson, Montgomery, Lefeld and Rosefelt? Ouch.
Austin is the worst D1A player I think I've ever seen. I'd happily give his scholly to Pat Phillips if the decision were mine.

Our Skills & Athletism
Yes Western didn't have mad athletism but they had very strong and clutch shooters through out their roster. Snyder the 6'6 blond dude reminded me of the kind of player that I always though Austin would be till I saw him first in the scrimmages in his first year. Austin clearly doesn't have the skills for anything other  shot. Austin doens't have those skills whatsover. Yes, we were smallish , but Western wasnt' THAT big height wise either just that we only seem to play only our 6'8 seniors and thats it basicly. Why we couldn't find time for Vandameer or Lefeld is beyond me. Out two lone 6'11 centers are going to have to learn how to play , and sitting on the bench is not helping them. Our entire post game will be turned over to those two next year and that have not gotten the grooming necessary for them to suceed. Relying on our seniors is fine, but we must be able to use our "two towers" some time.
Your right about guys like Steven being still too skinny and lanky to guard those muscle bound guys of Western. Ben Reed must go what, at least 220 at 6'3. Like I've said before on the Ladies Threads and here, you can't live on the 3 alone. You must have a strong inside game, and we had virtually none during the Western game. Its sad that Eynk hasn't learned to play a little inside at all. All he does is camp around the 3pt. line.
It also makes me sick the way we seem to pickup our dribble way too much making it too easy for us to get trapped in the corners. Please, stop picking up the dribble untill you find somone to pass too guys!
Lets get it together for Ball St.
GO BG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CRUSH THE CARDINALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
