From the Couch

Post by Rollo83 »

1. Don’t like the stripe down the helmet…back of helmet looks empty
2. Like the brown facemask
3. True freshman and redshirt freshman making plays
4. Samuel nice looking player
5. Need names on back of jerseys…can’t tell who’s who especially with double numbers
6. Idaho is bad…new quarterback struggled
7. Our OL is improved
8. Again we play well early in season but how do we play once people have tape on us?
9. Second half Idaho defensive adjustments we couldn’t counter a concern?
10. Not sure what the Idaho announcers were calling our quarterback? Schills?
11. Our DL can rotate some bodies in…that’s nice.

I love the new helmet too. As for saying the wrong name, an official during the game during a review called us Boise State. That got a stir from the crowd.

I'm concerned about the second half offense, but it looked like they ran some pretty vanilla plays as well. With a lead that big they didn't want to tip their hand for the upcoming weeks. Also it looked like Schilz wasn't going to force the issue on many passes. This shows that they can manage a large lead and hold on to it. The bigger question I have, did are defense play well, or is Idaho's offense that bad?

We buttoned it up on offense in the second half. Tough to get a read on the defense...that QB from Idaho was pretty bad. It became pretty apparent early on that our defense had no fear of the long ball...it's easier to stop a team when you know they're basically only going to be working 20 yards downfield at the most....

Really good effort...our tackling was miles better than last year..or the last decade.

You're right, this is a big question that needs answered. However with Morgan State and Wyoming as our next two opponents, we may not get a definitive answer until MAC play gets underway. We won't play a team with a good offensive attack until September 24, maybe even October 1 depending on how you feel about Miami. I've always considered the Redhawks to be more defensively-oriented.

187 yards of rushing. Last year we averaged less than 70 yrds per game. This to me is the biggest storyline. If we can have a little more balanced offense and control the clock this could be the biggest improvement to our defense. I'm still on cloud nine after this win, and believe we can start this season 3-0. Will be nice rolling into MAC play with a little momentum on our sides.

I was very pleased with the performance last night.
Defense: I thought they stepped up and kept pressure on the qb. Besides the coverage break-down in the 2nd half, I thought they looked really good. Was Idaho's Offense bad? I don't think so. We executed well, and didn't give up too many big yardage plays. I'd rather see a 15 yard pass inter, than a 40 yard gain.

Offense: Played really good. O'line broke down a few times, but nothing like last year. Our qb had time, which was nice. The play calling did get very vanilla in the 2nd half, but I thought it was good clock management. A bad call on #4 (I think) kept us from a potential score, and that would have taken the steam out of Idaho a lot earlier.

Special Teams: Great punt coverage!! 2nd half we had 2 punts that were inside the 5 yard line??

I'm excited about Falcon Football again!

What we did this week was:

1. Beat a team wasn't expected to be very good.
2. Looked pretty good doing it.

We should be encouraged for many reasons listed above including the good rushing performance and the MUCH improved tackling.

Now the objective should be to play better next week.

Flip - spot on.

The tackling thing is the big difference, though. If that's a trend and not a fluke, our defensive will be significantly better than it's been in a long, long time. It won't make us awesome - in and of itself - but it will made us competent and keep us in more games.

I liked that we got a lead and relied on our defense to win a game. Win has that ever happened? Like everybody else I didn't like the playcalling in the second half but future opponents only have a half of football to watch on us. I was a little surprised their QB was never yanked. I thought we were going get a defensive score (other than the safety) with how careless he was in the second half.

A win next week would make us 2-0 for the first time since 2003!!

After watching the game again the play calling in the second half was about shortening the game. This is what good teams do with a lead. They make the other teams offense be perfect, while protecting and resting their defense. Next week we will see a pretty bland offense, and will not see all of it until probably Miami.

I am proud that we dominated a team that many analysts picked to beat us. The lumps of last year will hopefully continued to be gains for this year. On a plus side maybe a 3-0 start will shut up birdman. (They say winning fixes everything.)

Regardless whether Idaho was good or not, we did what we should have done which was control the game. That's what good teams do.

And yeah...not upset that we tried to run so much in the second half. We have to get a consistent running game if we want to win anything this year.
