Your FIRST Stroh experience!

Post by factman »

I'm curious as to what anyone that went to the volleyball game last night, thought of their first Stroh experience. I went to the dedication and the game and here are a few of mine.
-student turnout and and their involvment was tremendous!
-overall the building looks GREAT!
-still need more graphics (especially the walls on either side of video board)
-folks with bad knees or hips will not want to sit down low because of all the steps getting to and from their seats
-the PA system gets a "D" at best (a bit better that AA but.........)
(hopefully it can be adjusted)
-too bad they didn't have the archives display ready for the opening and I hope it is bigger that just the few empty cases they have out now.
-why didn't they put an escaltor on the entry steps?

I'm sure I've missed a few, but the overall experience was very nice.

Factman, I have to agree with your points. I do know in talking to the project manager that the sound system willbe better tuned. One of the bugs that they will work on, but have not had things/crowds, etc., in place to tune in yet. But it will be fixed, as it at least has that capability. Your point about folks sitting down low may also have to be something that the Athletic Department will need to deal with operationally. There are lower doors, which could allow folks access from down below, it may just need to be controlled. I know that they do not want any conflicts with the teams coming and going from the court, but they have the ability to make some accommodations. As far as an escalator goes, it was never an option due to budget considerations. After the bids it was too big an issue to deal with based upon the bidding/purchasing restrictions, as well as what impact it would have had on the design. Hopefully people will quickly get used to the location of the elevator, and use it if need be. I was just thrilled to see the student turnout. While it is an old issue, I hope that the students turning out will put pressure on folks to make sure that there are enough seats for them when basketball gets here.

In any case, it was a fabulous first event, and I am very happy for Coach and the team.

When we took our tour of the Stroh last summer, Mr Elsasser said they were 10 million UNDER budget. You can build a helluva escalator for 10 mil! Maybe he wasn't telling us all the facts! ;)

Just out of curiosity how was the noise level? Can 2,200 people in the Stroh make as much noise as they could in AA?
BG '10

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

Remember, the students are paying fees to cover most of the construction. The lower the cost, the fewer years they will have to pay the extra fees.

Under budget? I heard that, too, but I hope that doesn't mean that they cut corners and the place will be a pit in 20 years.
(Did one of the offices really flood already?)

Sound is not something to skimp on with cheap microphones or speakers.

What I really hope for is a system which allows us to hear AND understand whatever is being said, and that they don't blast us out by playing the damned music so loud (and I don't mean the band!).

I go to the games to watch the games and cheer the falcons, not to have music blasted too loud. "The louder you play the music, the more fun the crowd thinks they're having"???? No, this is definitely NOT true.
"Are you pondering what I'm pondering?"
