Criminal trespassing for being in a dormitory "unescorted"? That's garbage.

They were probably going to see some people in the dormitory, and they didn't check in, because somebody let them through the door. Better question is how did the police ever get involved? This happens every single day in every dorm on the BGSU campus.

And when the BGNews reports later in the semester that a young lady was attacked in her dorm room and the perpetrator entered through a propped open door, you would be screaming and yelling.

Unfortunately bad things can happen and there is a rule that visitors must be escorted throughout the residence hall by a resident of the building. You don't have to like it, but it is the rule. Break the rule, and be prepare to suffer the consequences.

Knowing a couple of students that were raped while I attended the university, I think the rule needs to be enforced more thn it is.

How did campus police get involved? Several ways - some of which could have severe consequences if the players were belligerent.

I'd be willing to bet that 90% of the time, the door is not "propped open" as with a doorstop or something, but a case of somebody letting someone in or holding the door out of habit for somebody coming in while they're on their way out.

I do agree that enforcing the rule is justified, but I do think that turning it into "criminal trespassing" is probably taking it a bit far. Simply being in the dorm unescorted without any other apparent issues seems to me to be a student misconduct issue that does not require outside legal action.

I am not sure..... as I haven't talked to Nicholas how it works now.... but I am assuming there is a card reader at the doors. And you have to treat the dorms as private residences otherwise you have all sorts of issues. And I bet there was something other than just being in the building unescorted that triggered the criminal trespassing charges - we just hearing the entire story.... just like last week's jumper at Centennial.

After hours in Offenhauer there was always a student "night guard" on duty that you had to pass to get in. Seems there is more to the story here than we are getting.
