WCHA Bound???
Re: WCHA Bound???
We might have been better off if the 4 schools from Atlantic Hockey had joined the CCHA before LSSU, FSU, NMU, and Alaska jumped to the WCHA thus keeping the CCHA alive. As it stands now, Atlantic Hockey is full up with 12 teams and only offer 12 scholarships instead of 18. The ECAC is also full with 12 teams and Hockey East has the same travel requirements as the WCHA just in the other direction.
I will be VERY surprised to see us join an eastern conference at this point.

I agree. Unless you're a big hockey fan, you've never heard of The Minnesota schools. One downside would be that the eastern schools have small rinks and less chance to make any money, not good for league stability.unfalconbelievable wrote:My personal Opinion:
We would be better off to join the schools from the east.
Closer proximity for fans to support team.
Less Travel cost for athletic budget.
Likely to start winning faster and winning helps recruiting.
My guess would be that almost no BG fans will be driving to Minnesota for games.

Almost no BG fans drive anywhere for games.

Re: WCHA Bound???
BG's 30 day deadline to make a decision on this conference is fast approaching. Are we waiting for more information on others or does Greg Christopher think he is going to save the CCHA and become a hero to hockey fans?
Whats the hold up......?!?!? MAKE A DECISIONS.

Is today the deadline date?
No?
Why the rush? I don't think this is going to impact who we play this year.

Re: WCHA Bound???
Personally I believe the reason we haven't announced anything let is this quote right here
If those four and Huntsville agreed to this and the WCHA made it happen it would be a great for us, in a stocked 16 conferences that would have two divisions to make travel easier for all budget wise"That's a good option for Bowling Green," BG athletics director Greg Christopher said of the WCHA earlier this month. "The question is can we make it better and that's some of the conversations we're having behind the scenes with those schools now. Ultimately, how big would that league look and (what would) the configuration of that league (look like)?"
That started speculation the WCHA and the CCHA could be talking with four Atlantic Hockey schools - Canisius, Mercyhurst, Niagara and Robert Morris - about joining the WCHA

Re: WCHA Bound???
While I don't disagree that that is probably the holdup, a 16 team conference is a horrible idea. Two 8 team conferences with two auto bids is ideal. There has to be room for non conference games. Even with two divisions, there would still have to be inter-divisional games, or what is the point of one conference?BGFalconfromCincy wrote:Personally I believe the reason we haven't announced anything let is this quote right here

Eight teams, four games against each team means 28 regular season games. That leaves 6 non-conference games available. Very little room for inter-divisional play.
Those 6 games could easily be filled by large teams within 3 hours driving time.

WMU to have an announcement today - likely conference intentions. Rumor has it that WMU and SCSU to the SuperFriends Conference.
St Cloud? I don't believe a lot of their fans are going to be happy with this setup. We'll see.
Meanwhile in BG......... [crickets]

Re: WCHA Bound???
That is correct, according to news out today, St. Cloud and WMU are going to the NCHC which means BG now is very likely to accept the WCHA offer.

Come on people, when you have an invite in hand, there's nothing wrong with waiting until the last day to make sure you know your options.

Re: WCHA Bound???
Kinda looking like the WCHA deal is our only real option....If Notre Dame goes to the ACC instead of the Big 10, where does that leave thier hockey program?
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: WCHA Bound???
I'm going to go out on a limb right now.....with Notre Dame staying in the Big East for all other sports (which they have said they are doing) they will go to Hockey East and BGSU will go with them!

Re: WCHA Bound???
Why would we accept an invitation to join the WCHA? It makes no sense to be the only D-I overall school in the league. The auto bid is irrelevant because the team is not on the verge of making a run in the NCAA's by any stretch. The exposure that the program would get from the WCHA is that it has downgraded to the same level as a bunch of inferior schools. There is no way to see this move, if made, as anything short of a major downgrade to the program and to BG athletics in general. What is the next move - apply to join the Horizon league for basketball? I bet they would take St. Cloud State!!!
The Athletic Department has let the program fall for so many years that expectations are minimal, but BG should keep its head held high and rebuild per the commitment to hockey made last year. I would rather see them independent than forever irrelevant.
Also, I would love to see the team get an invite to Hockey East, but unless Coach York can really pull us through, I think it is very unlikely. The tragedy here is that Christopher most likely has failed to reach out to him to gauge the possible assistance he could provide.

Re: WCHA Bound???
If you look at it that way I believe the Miami Redskinhawks and now WMU are the only D1 schools in the new NCHC...correct? Certainly not a lot.
I am still hoping we can get into the NCHC as I feel it will be a more elite league. WCHA would be ok but I will miss the rivalry we had vs Miami especially.

Miami Western Michigan, Denver, North Dakota are all DI schools, Nebraska-Omaha is beginning a transition from DII to DI so in a few years Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State would be the only DII schools and Colorado College is DIII in other sports.ffejfalcon wrote:If you look at it that way I believe the Miami Redskinhawks and now WMU are the only D1 schools in the new NCHC...correct? The WCHA is a well known conference and especially with some of our CCHA rivals joining the league, fans would recognize many opponents. Independent hasn't faired too well for Huntsville, their programs is slowly moving closer to the end, esp with the university talking about adding DII football. WCHA would be less travel than Hockey East (except for Alaska, but we already play them so not a change.) If we play well and start getting into the NCAA tourney we can look to the NCHC or even hockey east in the future, but right now we have an invite to a well established conference with a long history. It would also open up recruiting in Minnesota and the upper midwest and help to continue rebuilding the BG Hockey program. When we're a top program again we can start being picky, but the WCHA invite is the sure bet, rather than hoping for a HE invite or trying to steal teams from Atlantic Hockey.DetroitFalcon wrote:Why would we accept an invitation to join the WCHA?
