Will the Ice Arena be ready for home opener?

Post by Freddie »

I have made it a point to walk thru the building once a week for the past several months, and I've got serious doubts that the current phase of work will be completed on time. Altho much progress is noticeable, a few things leave me scratching my head :-k

Why the long delay on the parking lot? The trucks and equipment seemed to be sitting in place for WEEKS with nothing being done.

The new NCAA tournament banners look GREAT! Brown and Orange look much nicer than those old black and yellow ones...they reminded me way too much of Pittsburgh Steelers :vom: Can't help but wonder why, when these were being hung,,,why someone couldn't have pulled down the massive wads of cobwebs in the SW corner? They are literally INCHES away from the 1st banner.

The new banner honoring Falcon Hockey Olympians looks real sharp...but why do the background pictures feature these players in PRO uniforms? The pic of Rob Blake hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup is a classic, but seems inappropriate on a banner honoring Olympians. I cerainly hope there is a new Scott Hamilton banner yet to be hung.

The east hallway has a fresh coat of paint, and looks much brighter. I hope they plan to fix/replace all those broken blocks along the baseboards in the NW corner...these have been broken/missing for YEARS.

The main entry, pro-shop/ticket counter looks fantastic. Very inviting and efficently laid out for multiple purpose.

If the new speakers sound half as nice as they look, it will be a MAJOR upgrade! I pray that the staff who will be operating the new sound system get the opportunity to practice with it.

Just because you asked, the Sentinal wrote an article about it: Ice arena continues to get new look (09-27-11)

WOW thanks for posting that article. WOW, what a HUGE difference. I was embarrassed to bring friends to the games last year, now I cant wait to just walk around the arena. I hope I have a chance to make it back to BG for a game.
=D>

We are hoping to tailgate in the parking lot for the Oct. 8th game. Hope the lot has been paved by then.

We are hoping to tailgate in the parking lot ...........

Funny you say that. The weather is typically nice enough to tailgate the first month of hockey. Did it last year with a group of eight of us. Got out there early set up the tent in the grass, grill going, hangin' out. Thirty minuites prior to drop of the puck, campus police came over and threaten to ticket us for open-containers. BG campus police you going to ticket 2,500 people every home football for the same offense, as a falcon club member and alumni, I was thoroughly embarressed for BG campus police. In our 30s and 40s and a couple in there 50s, come on seriously. If I was doing keg stands and 19, ok I can see it. Sitting around eating hot dogs and drinking a beverage. WOW.

dforde - have fun and enjoy the tailgate, campus police burned that bridge for me for hockey. To bad because I might of brought our tent out right next to ya.

Please reconsider. We did this last year for the Saturday game against Michigan. It was a beautiful day (over 80 degrees) and we were there from 3pm until game time and then after the game we were out there until almost 11pm. Had a blast and did not even see a campus police officer. I even checked with a few campus administrators beforehand to make sure it was OK.

I think if you just put your drink in a plastic cup, they won't bother you.

The first time a group of us tailgated for a hockey game a cop drove by and asked if we had cups to put our beer in. We had a few but too many people showed up than what we had cups for. The cop left and came back a few minutes later with cups from McDonalds that we could put the drinks in.

You also might try e-mailing the BGSU Chief of Police and/or Jamie at the Ice Arena and let them know you plan on tailgating. A few years ago we had a cop shut us down and Buddy Powers went to bat for us. He told the Police Department not to shut us down unless we were being idiots.

They were in cups when he approached us. Nothing better to do them harass a group of supporting falcon fans. Its not as if hockey is lining them up at the doors as in the 80s, welcome the people you get to celebrate your sports, dont chase them away.

Maybe we'll reconsider dforde.

Heard that the parking lot should be done by the end of the week. Olympic Banners (two of them) are up, Championship Banners are up, CCHA Championship Banners are up and I'd post my pics, but I don't know how.

The stuff planned for the fan entrance area is going to be AWESOME!!

PUCK DROPS IN 5 DAYS!!
GO FALCON HOCKEY!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
