Royal canceled his visit to Bowling Green because he said graduating from The Citadel will provide ``better opportunities'' for him after he graduates.

I haven't seen this name on any of the Bowling Green recruit watch lists. This doesn't mean BG wasn't somewhat interested in him, just that it sounds like he wants to be a good military man instead. Nothing wrong with that decision.

I could be mistaken, but I think we can assume this kid was not talented enough to be a scholarship athlete at BG. I respect his decision to pursue a career in the military, as I once went that route myself attending West Point, but if he was a solid athlete, I can't imagine the academies (West Point, Annapolis, Air Force) would not have offered him the chance to play Division 1A, while attending a much more prestigious and respected institution than the Citadel (although that is not to say it isn't at all prestigious/respected).

Its possible he didn't have the grades for the major service academies but was strong enough to get into the Citadel.

as most schools do, however, exceptions are made for athletes. as far as the service academies go, i met cadets at west point, both athletes and prior service soldiers, who had miserable test scores and high school grades but were given an opportunity - after all, the mission is to find future officers for the army. also, for those athletes and prior service soldiers, and even high school students with strong credentials but weak grades/scores, the service academies have a prep school for that very purpose.
