Blame the Top Flight band...
Whatever game Top Flight plays for... the team loses. Talon band, on the other hand, is apparently undefeated. Evidently we're jinxed.

I agree with fact man, play the traditionals well: FF, Ay Zig, Shake you Tail Feathers, Hey Baby, etc. Anything else just confuses people. Its not like football. Basketball fans don't come for the quality of the music - the music is just a bonus between breaks.

I'm puzzled too. At yesterday's basketball game we played AZZ and Go BG so many times that I thought the crowd was going to get sick of it. Not to mention playing Hey Baby, School's Out, Shake a Tailfeather, Screamer (twice?), Respect (of which I was amused by the timing, as it came right after one of several terrible calls- or lack thereof- by our oh-so-typical MAC refs), and especially the fight song oodles of times.
Being a bandie who was in attendance at the game and not in the band, I thought it went great! I'm just not a fan of "I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band" And there was a less than perfect opening to one of the two Screamers. From where I was standing everyone seemed to be liking what you guys were doing!!
Nice Job!
I love band! Be good to your horn, it's been good to you hasn't it? ^_^
The reason we play those so often is the same reason the cheerleaders do the Let's Go Falcons and BG-SU cheers so often. When trying to keep momentum up, you have to play and cheer things the CROWD knows and will get into. Everyone around me sang Ay-Zig and Go BG when you played it so don't think we got sick of it!Godsgirlerific wrote:I'm puzzled too. I agree...............the band plays the same songs like GO BG and ay zigg because they are familiar. As a cheerleader its more collegic to call simple basic cheers like Go BG and Let's go Falcons because its easy for the crowd to do too!! Nobody wants to listen to us call cheers that tell stories like in high school! I wish the band could play "hey" again but the crowd yells "Hey" You Suck.......so I guess that is no longer an option.....unfortunatly!
Anyways I like the music played at basketball games. Football is different.......can the band play anything different at football games? Football is so much longer and there are more opportunities for the band to play, so the music does tend to get repetitive!!

Always there to cheer on the Falcons.......GO BG!!!!

We played Hey! as an alumni band a couple years ago when we played the BG-UT game. I think it's ridiculous that the song has been "banned." Other schools do it. It is such a momentum extender, carries the crowd energy through a timeout instead of letting it die. There's going to be an alumni band playing on Saturday (or at least some alumni playing with the band...) so who knows what may happen??cheer4BG wrote:I agree...............the band plays the same songs like GO BG and ay zigg because they are familiar. I hope NOTHING changes as far as the music the bands play. After litsening to the Turdledo pep band play we have the best in the area. I think kindergardeners playing kazoos would have been more in tune, exciting, and made my ears bleed less. So keep it up, and don't worry Top Flight Band, you'll get a break soon
We are lucky that we have a band and directors that are in tune with the game and know what to play and when. I would just like to see the department communicate with more than a paper script detailing when announcements are going to be made. The announce killing the croud momentun with announcements was mentioned on another thread. They follow a script! Talk about not feeling the flow of the game. The one thing I liked about the Toledo women's game was the communication between the band and announcer. The band director had a radio and headset to be able to know when to play. This was much more effecient and professional. If they can have it then we should be able to have that and more!

Besides being out of tune and sounding like butt in general, turdledo's band was the rudest band I've ever been around. If anyone in our band was like that, we'd be kicked out in a heartbeat!

Anyone?
Kidding.
But while we're discussing that band twenty miles up I-75, I'll just rehash the point that their marching band was so awful I was embarrassed for them. You couldn't even make fun of it, it would be like making fun of someone who can't read...
Cheer4BG, I don't know if maybe it's just due to slow communication, but it seems like in football there's less time for the band to play than it seems like. Or at least, there are many times for us to play, but they're all really short. Not long enough to play a whole "pep band" type song, usually. And sometimes we can't even do that between quarters, because the announcements go on so long. *sigh*

No, I wasn't puzzled by how often we play those songs. I was referring to the comment about how the a-bands supposedly play Beethoven.

Maybe not Beethoven, but as of late there has been A LOT of Bach. What is referred to as "Scary," is actually the introduction to Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D. But who cares? Instead of actually teaching people what its called, lets just call it "Scary!!!" Whatever. I'm moving out of Music-major talk. Adios, Jeff
