Question: In a game like this, especially when your QB seems to be struggling... 3 picks and 3 fumbles-1 lost, is there a REASON why you wouldn't give your backup QB some reps? It would seem to me that Hurley could've benefitted from some time...would he have made a difference? Probably not, but getting NO time in a blowout loss doesn't seem to make sense to me. UT has been playing 2 QB's all season, though one seems to be getting the great majority of the snaps now.... It just seems to me that we could benefit from giving our backup some time.

Backup QB time?
Due to some major unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to go to the game...and, only heard part of it on the radio in Cleve. (BTW, the PD says there is "NO" local radio coverage, which I find unbelievable)...

Our freshman QB took snaps yesterday and caught a TD pass. He has appeared in two blowouts- New Hampshire and Temple, although Temple wasn't a blowout when he went in the first time. I agree with you 61- at some point pull your starter and give the others some time. It could certainly pay off down the road.

If the scuds do it, that is reason enough for us to NOT do it!
Didn't Macon also fumble late, which could have made a huge difference? I'll leave those decisions for Coach Clawson.

Schilz needs reps too...he's only a Soph and was hurt most of last year.

Re: Backup QB time?
Remember guys, I'm NOT talking about a true freshman....I'm talking about a redshirt freshman (Hurley), who supposedly was in the "fight" for a starting job thru fall camp... yet, no PT in a game like this? Doesn't make sense...As to UT, I wasn't referring to their freshman QB...but Dantin and the kid from Glenville who'd been "sharing" the job... the Glenville kid was in the OSU game at the end IIRC..(I believe he's a soph. also).

Re: Backup QB time?
Hurley played yesterday, are you saying he should have come in sooner than he did?

Re: Backup QB time?
Hurley played the last two series. No passes although a fumbled snap might have been intended to be a pass. I would like to have seen him throw a few. At 55-10, what is there to lose? I'm not suggesting a QB switch at all but giving a little bit of experience to a backup is not a bad idea. I think we may have retained Pagel if we did that a little last year late in the season. Don't get me wrong, overall I like what clawson is doing for the program. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a big deal.
Re: Backup QB time?
We need to give Hurley a try. He is tougher and a better runner. Our line is still poor even by MAC standards and Schilz is terrible under pressure, he is just too soft and melts with any kind of pass rush. The key with Hurley is his accuracy.

Re: Backup QB time?
Schilz has completed 65% of his passes for 1,329 yards, 15 touchdowns and 7 interceptions this year.
He's started a total of 13 games in his young career. I don't know about you, but I am excited to have him under center at BGSU for another 2 1/2 plus years.
This team has much bigger problems than quarterback play IMO.

Right you are, Rollo...... I see no reason to make a change at QB.

Yep he fumbled late. Nope, it would have made no difference- game was over by then. Hence the wisdom of giving young players some reps.factman wrote:If the scuds do it, that is reason enough for us to NOT do it!Didn't Macon also fumble late, which could have made a huge difference? Re: Backup QB time?
As I'd mentioned, I was unable to even hear the game, or at least very much of it , past the 1st 10 min. on the radio.... and I wasn't calling for a CHANGE in QB's either...only that Hurley could've benefitted from more reps than the last 2 series and NO passes thrown... not sure overall what his stats are now, but he even got minimal time in the Morgan St. game, with only a few passes thrown...Siborg wrote:Hurley played the last two series. Just saying we need to develop depth at all positions, including QB; what happened last year when Shilz went down? No experience other than the Nordonia kid, who'd thrown a few passes vs. Boise the year before.

Re: Backup QB time?
I thought Shilz needed to watch the second half from the sidelines. Not a permanent change or anything but he needs to learn that he can't force things that are not there. Sometimes there is not a positive play to be made and he needs to learn that. He brings a lot of good things to the table but he also makes quite a lot of mistakes. He throws it up hoping for the best way too often.

Re: Backup QB time?
I tried to make this same point during the game, but was criticized by some. Schilz is not a physical player and made mental mistakes. No harm in setting a young player and let them learn as they watch the game from a different view. This is sometimes the place were more growth occurs in a player. I will not be surprised if Schulz doesn't complete the season due to injury. If so, Hurley must be ready and as someone has already stated, the QB race was neck to neck until game 1.

Re: Backup QB time?
After watching the game, I would have pulled Schilz early in the 3rd...Hurley should have seen extensive time in that game.
