Big East Expansion
Any chances this will impact the MAC? With the schools they are talking about adding...I don't see how they retain their BCS status.

The Big Least wants to add Temple...... Take them...... But if you take Temple please take UMass...... UMass begins MAC play in a year and that at least gave us an even number of teams but still 7 in each division.... I think a 12 team conference is much better than 14.

Re: Big East Expansion
In 4-5 years, the non-BCS schools with either be forced to go to FCS or will be pushed further into college football obscurity. In the end its all about $$ anyways, something the NCAA willfully chooses to ignore and allow to happen. Those possible additions to the Big East won't make the conference any stronger, it'll just give them an excuse to have a BCS tie-in.

Funny thing...the 1st school I thought of was UMASS... (forgot that they might be interested in former doormat Temple, now "respectable" again).... Let them take both those schools and the MAC can get balanced out again, though they'd probably want us in the West again. [isn't it about time that someone ELSE made the move...are you listening MU?]

Re: Big East Expansion
I say let UMass and Temple leave, also.
The remaining schools get divvied up north and south, instead of east and west.
You have a division with UT, BG, Miami, Ohio, Kent, Akron in the South) and a North division with: EMU, CMU, WMU, N. Illinois, Buffalo and Ball St. Or switch UT and Ball St. if you like. Either works for me.
This E-W stuff is crap and deserves to be put in the circular file forever.

I think this filters down to the MAC at some point. But this is turning into such cloak and dagger, and frankly so many moves make so little sense, it leaves one thinking we won't see the end of this for many years.

Re: Big East Expansion
I kinda worry about Miami or Ohio going elsewhere...the former because of their perceived "prestige" and decent athletic teams, and the latter simply because of their age and academic standards and maybe their connection with MU. There is always UT and WMU, as well, who always have athletic potential. I don't see BG fitting anywhere else than the MAC.NWLB wrote:I think this filters down to the MAC at some point. It would be a shame to see Temple leave...they have elevated this conference IMO. But if I were them, I would hold off to see if the BE even survives. I'm not sure joining a conference of UC, Louisville, some Florida directional schools, and a WVA program that will leave asap once the opportunity arises would be all that attractive.
Just some rambling thoughts...

Re: Big East Expansion
I'll respectfully totally disagree with Temple. They were a mistake since day one, they remain that, and always will be that. They have failed to close the deal as they saw it. They have not brought anything to the conference in respect, national PR, or much of anything else. Frankly they can't even close the deal in the MAC, much less display the means to elevate play beyond it. They are a total waste of time.
I think as far as most MAC fans go, they have a hard time even remembering Temple is doing anything with the conference, much less elevating their point of view based on their interaction with it.
What I see being a worry, is that these moves are not going to be purely about TV markets next time. Yes, WMU, Toledo, even Miami to some perverse line of thought, bring some kind of theoretical bump in TV markets. But I think people are going to be hunting for warm bodies for awhile.
We could see a flurry of smaller schools elevate and play in the MAC while some leave, etc. I don't expect there to be an ounce of loyalty displayed at all.
Maybe we see some strange talk of mergers among the lower level conferences.

The Big East is trying to get Boise now. That conference is done.

Ridiculous. If the Big 12 had any sense they'd grab Boise and BYU and get back to their twelve and be done with it.kdog27 wrote:The Big East is trying to get Boise now. That conference is done.

The big problem...in my view...is that BGSU is really not talked about, or attractive to anyone. We are completely irrelevant on the national stage, in our two best men's sports.

Nope, I don't anymore, but then from past experience, the fluff chat on those networks is more about self-serving attempts to jack ratings for dog games, or to fill air. There is about as much logic and sense on those shows as most political debates.dstubb wrote:You must not listen to college talk radio, or even watch ESPN.NWLB wrote: They have not brought anything to the conference in respect,
I would wager they babble a lot about Temple because, in theory, it is in a "big market" and plays in a "big stadium," and "gee whiz look at what they've done." BS. They are a waste of time for the MAC, and the conference will never get anything worthwhile out of having them. The MAC is screwing itself over having them, and if or when they do leave, will have left nothing of value behind.
They are a WASTE. Nearly as bad as Marshall, but at least the Herd won games and brought legitimate respect, not drive-by chit-chat.
Seriously, I read, and I don't read anything serious about Temple and all the conference jumping, because the wide-world knows that school borders on inept when it comes to college football. They stink so badly on the institutional and historic levels they are radioactive from an expansion standpoint. Of course, we are talking the Big East, so god only knows how insane this gets.
