Bohemian Rhapsody?? Uh-oh....
We over at BGHS are going to take Bohemian Rhapsody to contest!!

BTW 227 total people is great! I can't wait to see the FMB in action this year!
Are you a student, teacher or what over at BGHS??? A good friend of mine taught at BGHS a while back...

"Rohrer? he was terrible! He played favorites to an extreme, his drill was awful. He would move sections one at a time. He was the reason I didn't feel bad about quitting (I had a back injury my junior year.) He screwed over my wife, named the wrong people section leader repeatedly. I am glad he left."

Is this the former Millenium Falcon? Being one of those section leaders at that time, I would like to know what you meant by that  . I can think of one clear cut bad choice of a section leader during his time and that one was not his call. The grads pushed for it to get someones ego under control and it didn't work. That's a really dumb reason to give someone section leader. Not because they are the best for the position, but because they have an ego and you think that will fix it :?
Obviously you had some personal issues with Rohrer. I kind of agree with some of what you said, but I think you went a bit far with it. His drill was mostly simple and kind of boring. He tried to do 'cute' things to please the crowd  . One section moving at a time rarely, if ever, happened. What did happen was sections seemed to be kind of doing their own thing in relation to the rest of the band at times. That's not exactly good either. Keep in mind, I wasn't the biggest fan of his drill writing either. I just feel like your issues with him are more personal than anythingand it shows in your comments. He wasn't the greatest marching band director, but he tried alot harder than most and was the best the FMB had between Jay and Carol.

"He did a nice job in concert band (I never was in his band, but the results were good, and he had a very nice conducting style.)"

Yes he did. I wasn't his biggest fan in MB or A-band, but in a concert setting, he was one of the better conductors I've ever worked with, and I've worked with alot of good ones. The only ones I would put ahead of him are Chief, the conductor of the symphony orchestra I was in, and a former director at Cal-Poly who conducted a national band I was involved with. Rohrer filled in for symph band rehearsal once and it was the most productive rehearsal we had that year.

"I liked Sparks despite his amazing ego. I still use the "toh" thing with my band...it really works."

I only have one thing to say about the Juan Valdez look alike..... ewww!
Okay, and this too "NO! YOU CHILL!!" That was classic.

I did have a lot of personal issues with him. It does taint my evaluation, but He did make some decisions about personnel based on personal grudges of section leaders.

My wife was the next in line to be a section leader in 1992. Sparks told her that if the section had been large enough, she would have been in a leadership position. The next fall, after 3 years of marching, her section leader made her an alternate. It was total and complete BS. The section leader was a Rohrer favorite, nothing was changed.

What was difficult for me to accept was being passed over for section leader for someone younger, after I had to have a section leader who was a tad hypocritical who got the job at least partially because he was older. Either age and experience counts or it doesn't. I don't want to sound so negative and critical, but my last year in band was miserable due mostly to him.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't feel entitled to a leadership position. And what happened to my wife is what REALLY ticked me off.

Marching band tech was a bad experience for me with Rohrer. He was probably the best between Jackson and Carol, but that sends chills up and down my spine to think what this band program has been through if that is the case

That WAS classic. BTW this is the 'old' MillenniumFALCON. Rohrer had a great, clean conducting style. He was the most like chief in that respect. As much as I hate to admit it, I do emulate his style a lot. I respect his UC Conservatory training and his concert strengths. He was IMHO way below the standard needed for a BGSU MB director.

I'm one of the assistant field commanders (DM) at BGHS. Apparently, the JH director is writing some custom drill for us. It should be cool!
