Re: Looks like no TV this week?
Coach Clawson Memo to File:
1. Get a Off Coord tomorrow morning.
2. Coach to win, not lose.
3. Get a box of Manpons for # 7 QB. Totally pissed himself all day, again.
4 . Find me a Leader to lead this team on Offense.
5. Go give the Defense a big thank you for keeping the team in the games.
6. Work, Work, Work on Special Teams.-Kick ball down the middle of field.Learn Biddy Ball skills on kick returms.
This loss is totally PATHETIC. Playing to stay in the hunt for the MACC and remain bowl eligible, and come out flat as a board. The first half was some of the most uninspired offensive playing I have ever seen. Nine games into the season and we still don't have a play to get 1 yd on 3rd and 4th. downs in the redzone. That is COACHING!!!! FB or HB??? We see one every week across the line from us.
QB play is awful. Don't tell me how he has thrown for ???????? yds. BS. Tell me when he gets a heart and mans up and leads his team.He plays scared shitless! Could have scored twice today in the Redzone, but instead, pisses himself and has TO's.If I am Hurley, I am off to new pasture.Clawson has fallen in love with this kid, and come hell or high water, he is going to stick with him. There is no way in hell that this can continue. This team will implode if they do not see a leader in the huddle. And the QB is not the answer.Coming out of camp the QB race was neck to neck, so why in the hell hasn't Hurley been given a real, true shot at QB? Someone please tell me.
Watch the body language of this team and the writing is on the wall. The next 3 games will tell but I don't see any change .
This game was a gift to KS , Well, we are out of gifts, and the Coach and his palyers need to step up.
Hope I am wrong, but I see a rough three weeks ahead.

Food for thought... maybe it is the OC that have fallen in love with Shilz due to the fact that Matt was supposed to go to Kansas State and then when he got the job here Matt followed him here. Maybe he is in Clawson's ear saying that Matt is the one that should be playing...

This is something I've wondered about too . . . if the OC changes QB's, he then "looks bad" - since he's been pushing Matt since hi school. Hmmmm????vwfalcon wrote:Food for thought... maybe it is the OC that have fallen in love with Shilz due to the fact that Matt was supposed to go to Kansas State and then when he got the job here Matt followed him here. If the QB doesn't learn (when to run & when to not throw into coverage) since last year, it's time too look for someone else.
And like others have said, in the summer/fall, the QB's were suppose to be "neck & neck" (or was that just BS)

Clawson is considered an offensive guru. He has been a QB coach and offensive coordinator his whole career. He is also the head coach and is ultimately responsible for the choice of QB . Clawson can at any time make a change if he feels that The QB is hurting the team. I believe that the issue is the lack of a run game rather than the QB. I was really looking for a commitment to the run game this year but once again it's thrOw throw throw40 and 50 times a game.

We have more of a run game this year than we did last year. It's coming along.sportydude1818 wrote:Clawson is considered an offensive guru. Really? We ran for 45 yards today against a 1-6 team

We were trailing the whole game. It's not like you're going to run the ball most of the time when you're losing.sportydude1818 wrote:Really? We ran for 45 yards today against a 1-6 team
Plus you were minus your top 2 running backs today. Given that, any gameplan based on running the ball a lot was probably thrown out the window.

I didn't see this game but it sounds like a Wyoming replay.
For Schilz, it could still be residue from last year. He was dinged up most of last year and was probably told to avoid too much contact given the coaches didn't think they had a credible backup. Does not excuse it lasting this long but it might be part of the reason.
I hate to fall into the backup QB should be playing routine but I have to agree that we could at least get him in for a meaningful series or two. Clawson hates a 2 QB sytem but I like what Louisville did years ago with LeFors and Brohm. Lefors was clearly the starter but each game mid first half, Brohm would get a couple series. I think it paid dividends for them over time.

Re: Looks like no TV this week?
I don't understand all this calling for Hurley. He has played a few times this year. He SUCKS. He flat out cannot throw well enough to play division 1 football. The coaches see him every day in practice. We all saw him play a few times this season. People who saw spring practices/game said the same thing. I don't know what the heck you're basing the fact he's better than Schilz on...except you don't like Schilz.
Personally, I'm lukewarm on Schilz. He has a big arm and can make plays down the field. What I don't like about him is that he's not a real great athlete and really gets rattled under pressure. He's also not real accurate, he can make all the throws, but can be erratic at times. Most of what people here don't like about him though is stuff that he CAN grow out of...he still makes the mistakes young players make. A lot of boneheaded throws into coverage, struggles in the redzone, doesn't know when to run/slide/etc. The kid has a VERY talented arm, and until I see somebody show at least a FLASH that they might be better I think it's effing stupid to be asking for a QB change. That being said, if we're ever going to win with Schilz we're going to have to protect him better.
Overall I agree that the playcalling this year has stunk. I don't think we stick with the running game nearly enough (yesterday notwithstanding, but with Samuel we CAN run the football). I also don't think we do a good job mixing plays. We hit a couple big runs we should be going to a playaction to hit them deep...our offense is far too horizontal for my liking. Schilz's strength is throwing the ball down the field, and we have a great playmaker in Jorden...we should take advantage of that more often, IMO.
I'm really torn on this coaching staff. I don't think Clawson does nearly enough to drum up student/local support of the team. I know this SHOULDN'T be part of the job, but at BG it's necessary (and IMO might have been Urban & Dakich's greatest strengths). I love the talent we've brought in, but I really don't like some of the tactical moves we make on gameday...I think we're way too passive...and we rarely come out as the team with the most energy. Clawson to me looks like he has the makings of a mediocre at best HC...the type of guy you might keep at a MAC school for 10 years, and he'll win 1 MAC title eventually if he has an experienced team, but not a guy that's gonna build a consistently great MAC program. Of course the downside is the guys that COULD build a consistently great MAC program will be gone in 3 years, so pick your poison in that regard.

Tell me when you or anybody has seen Hurley play this year in a meaningful situation? Playing with # 2 OL and a game that is all but over IS completely different than getting a REAL chance. Practice vs Game = big difference.
All I know is if Shitz keeps playing the way he has, this team will spiral down to the bottom, and Clawason may never get them back in focus.
I must ask the question- WHAT RISK IS THERE WITH GIVING HURLEY A REAL SHOT?
I say give him a shot and then we can all see where the team is afterwards. I know where we are now.

Re: Looks like no TV this week?
Giving Hurley a chance produces 1 of 3 results...
1. Hurley does great and keeps the job
2. Hurley doesn't do great and Shilz realizes he needs to step it up and does
3. Hurley doesn't do great and Shilz loses confidence and in turn doesn't do great either

Re: Looks like no TV this week?
So 2 out of 3 are positive. I will take a 66% chance on improving my team any day.
Re: Looks like no TV this week?
I don't need to see Hurley have a shot in a real game to see that he doesn't have an arm capable of moving the ball down the field. It wasn't that he was playing in garbage time or behind the #2 OL or whatever. He just doesn't have the arm...at this point he's a scrambling QB. If you wanna see him in the game, bring him in as a change of pace for trick plays or to run that retarded wildcat every once in awhile and maybe throw a pass out of it. But from what I've seen he has done NOTHING to earn a shot at being the starter except for the fact that he's not Schilz.
You're essentially saying you want to make a change for the sake of making a change. Because personally I don't see Schilz as the reason why we suck offensively. The mistakes Schilz makes are mostly the types of things that experience will correct...he's still just a sophomore. You think the freshman is NOT going to make those same types of mistakes? Outside of the mistakes Schilz is capable of making plays.
To me the biggest reason we suck is our playcalling flat out sucks. And it goes beyond suck everytime we come within pissing distance of the endzone. What infuriates me even more is that we seem to KNOW we cannot make FGs so we make a large area of the field 4 down territory (correctly), but then DO NOT play it like a 4 down situation.
Something needs to be done about the playcalling ASAP, IMO...it sucked last year and has been just as bad this year. Flat out...we're not putting our offensive players in the position to succeed, IMO.

Fourteen simple words in the English language, never before in history put together in that order provided me with a laugh this morning -- I'm not sure why.hammb wrote:. . . And it goes beyond suck everytime we come within pissing distance of the endzone.
But, Hammb, I truly believe that I am going to begin using the phrase "it goes beyond suck" in my everyday converstaion.
Overall, you sum things up pretty well. I'm glad I didn't get a chance to see the game Saturday.

Re: Looks like no TV this week?
I've said all along the play calling is designed for the offense to fail. When you shrink the field like BG has on offense the past two years, you're playing right into the hands of the defense. Another thing I hate is that there is no risk taking until the team is behind, like the bomb to Jorden on Saturday came when the team was down 17-6...where was that when the game was 3-3? The play calling instills no confidence within the offense, which is why you're getting the results you're seeing. Guys are not going to grow and improve on offense if they're put in these situations game after game.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
