Its only effective when you have a guy back there who can also pass, which is why it worked so well when AT ran it.

PJ Pope was never a threat to throw and he gained yards running out of that formation....it's a fricking YARD. If you can't line up and get the push needed to move the ball a yard...and we never seem to be able to... the problem is with your offensive line.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I agree that the problem is largely with the OL, but I still hate that asinine wildcat we run. We have one effing play in that formation and everybody in the world knows it's coming and it's easily stuffed just about every time. And to make matters worse we seem to save it for short yardage situations or in the redzone when we desperately NEED those yards...and yet it seems to fail a VERY large percentage of the time.Flipper wrote:PJ Pope was never a threat to throw and he gained yards running out of that formation....it's a fricking YARD. I HATE that formation from this offense. For that matter, I hate nearly everything about the playcalling with this team. I think the OC has been TERRIBLE for the past 2 seasons. Our players need to play better, but the way we have called plays has just been mind boggling way too often, and that ineffective wildcat is one of the biggest issues.

Wildcat is about about the number of blockers vs defenders. You replace a QB with an extra blocker. Its not about the threat to throw although that was a bonus with AT. And yes, we are not good at it.

Dump the Wildcat forever....now. The playcalling inside the red zone is questionable at best and bad at worst. How the hell we could have 400 yards passing and only 15 points is beyond me.

Watching them run that formation brings back horrible memories of GB's last two years of 20+ QB draws a game. Ineffective, stupid and moronic.

Also when PJ Pope ran out of that formation it was relatively a new idea. Now every team in the world has seen it!!!!!hammb wrote:I agree that the problem is largely with the OL, but I still hate that asinine wildcat we run. I have been on the fence with this coaching staff since early last year and I think I have fallen on the bad side for good

I also think we have the wrong guy running it. Hopgood is not our strongest inside runner by a longshot, yet he is usually the ball carrier on the play.

There are several theories to why it does not work. I don't care why it doesn't work, I just care that it doesn't work. Everyone on this board knows it doesn't work and I would think and hope our minds are inferior to a Division 1 college coaching staff, so why do they keep doing it? I said a month ago I never wanted to see that formation again yet they continue to use it over and over again
What is worse they use a formation that doesn't work in the BIGGEST moments of the game.
And I am so tired of hearing well we were 2-10 last year. So that makes it ok? Having one of the worst teams in school history shouldn't buy you excuses for the future, if anything it should do the opposite. We are 4-5 and could easliy be 7-2 or 6-3. We play in a lousy conference and our non conference schedule this year was more favorable than it has ever been in my memory. Going from 2-10 to 4-8 or 5-7 doesn't make me think we are on the right track, not in this conference. The talent level is pretty even top to bottom in the MAC, it's not like going from the bottom of the SEC to the top of the SEC.

To be fair, we had one of our worst, least talented and youngest teams ever in 2006, and we were 4-3 after 7 games using that offense. It was after the 7th game and we started throwing the ball around against Central Michigan, Temple, and Akron that the season went up in flames.jpfalcon09 wrote:Watching them run that formation brings back horrible memories of GB's last two years of 20+ QB draws a game. That offense was pretty darn effective in 2007 too, but that was mostly because we had a true wildcat/slash back in Anthony Turner running it, and when he couldn't go we had Freddie Barnes to spell him. We don't have guys like that now. We'd even call some designed QB runs with our normal QB in the game too to keep the defense off balance, because unlike Matt Schilz, Tyler Sheehan wasn't SCARED TO DEATH of contact.

Also, we once ran it with the jet sweep action for Cooper. Seems like that would freeze a couple guys meaning they don't need to get blocked.
