An interesting email I received about Ohio State

I haven't done the necessary legwork to check the validity of the arguments, but thought I'd share anyway:



Officials from the Ohio State University are about to close a massive
contract with a known sweatshop operator and labor rights abuser, Silver
Star Merchandising, to make OSU gear like sweatshirts, tee shirts and baby
onesies.

Students at OSU want no part in Silver Star's sweatshops and have been
fighting the contract. But so far, administrators have ignored them and shut
them out of the negotiation process. But you can help.

Natalie Yoon is a OSU student who has been trying to engage administrators
to stop the Silver Star contract negotiation. Tired of being ignored,
Natalie started a petition on Change.org to stop the OSU-Silver Star
contract. Sign Natalie's petition to tell Ohio State University not to make
OSU gear in sweatshops.

Salvadoran factory workers (who are mostly women) in one Silver Star factory
are locked in a 100-degree factory and paid just 78 cents an hour, according
to the Institute for Global Labor and Human Rights. Production goals are set
impossibly high -- so high that managers routinely lock factory workers in
overnight and force them to work 19 and 25 hour shifts with no overtime pay.

It gets worse. Natalie and other students working with United Students
Against Sweatshops at OSU have obtained documents showing that
administrators have not only ignored the checkered history of labor abuses
associated with Silver Star (and the Dallas Cowboys, which owns the
company), but may even have circumvented state-required open bidding for the
contract. Natalie hopes this petition will shed light on how the actions of
a few people at OSU could smear the Buckeye name and reputation.

Hearing from people from all over Ohio who don't want to see OSU gear
stained with gross labor violations will make OSU staff think twice before
awarding an underhanded contract to a deplorable company like Silver Star.

I don't...I really don't care. Sweatshops were good enough for the Irish, German, Italian etc... folks that came over here in the 1800's, they're good enough for the rest of the world.

I can only hope this is snark...but given that most folks here tend to be a little...wingnutty on this sort of stuff, I can never be sure.
