Man v Zone

Orr on using man to man exclusively against Tiffin.

“That’s what we’ve been focused on since August and we want that to be, really, our foundation." [[ Sentinel-Tribune ]]

With a team as athletic as this year's version of the Falcons, that has to lead to more fast breaks. It looked like they wanted to run as much as possible against Tiffin.

On the other side, Tiffin appeared to be in a zone most of the game. I'm guessing BG may see more of that before MAC play.

I don't know how much weight Cam Black has lost, but it is noticeable. Orr mentioned improvements made by Craig Sealey as well. It was just 12 minutes, but it looked to me that Jehvon Clarke is as quick as Jordon Crawford. I don't know if he was recruited as a point guard or shooter, but that was unexpected.

I like the focus on the man to man D. And I like we've been working on it since August. I believe that has GOT to help us this year come time for conference play. Let's work out the kinks in the NON-Con schedule and be ready to roll come January.

I can remember last year against Western Michigan they fell behind by 20 points in the first half using exclusively the zone. Western buried several long 3s without anyone seemingly close to the shooter. It was like they would retreat back to their spots with little pressure on the back court, it was awful to watch. Especially with the young Howard kid "mugging it" to the crowd all the way down the court after he hit the mammoth 3s. Granted there were more problems last year than just switching up the D, but teams are going to KILL people at this level if they are predictable. I remember us making a nice comeback in the 2nd half of the Western game because we started using 3/4 court pressure off of made shots and created some turnovers to get back in it. I also believe that with pressure defense [man or trapping D off of makes] the other team feels more frantic when they try to execute their 1/2 court offense, forcing shots.

Don't back off of this strategy coach Orr!!
