Gotta play D at the end of the game.

So we were no good under Meyer (no championships and no bowl appearances) but were good under Brandon (MAC East title and several bowl appearances).BGSU33 wrote:BG is now 4-11 in one-scores games under Clawson and we've had no MAC Championship appearances and mad on bowl game. For comparison sake with our opponent tonight, Ohio is 10-6 in one-score games the last three years under Solich making three bowls and two MAC Championship appearances. The bottom line is, good teams find ways to win. These kind of games will make or break your season.

It's amazing. I found somebody that thinks like me. People look at EMU or Miami and say, "They made huge turnarounds." Miami isn't as good as they were last year, and I can almost guarantee that EMU will win maybe 3 games next year. We are making slow and steady progress. This is how you build a winning product.Flipper wrote:We sucked last year..this year we're a cut below the top teams in the MAC...we've played them all...and on the cusp of being a good team. We'll see if we can get over the hump....

I was at a place where I could not hear the game. I assumed that both plays were done because of some reason I could not here, because in each situation it was obvious to ANYONE that you go in the other direction without extenuating circumstances.BGWriter wrote:As far as last night goes...Flipper wrote:We play hard...we just don't play well when we need to...
This game was potentially lost by two coaching decisions, not because the players gave it up in the last quarter -- although having this consistently happen IS a reflection of poor coaching, in my opinion.
Last night right before half, BG was driving and had just completed a pass to the Ohio 28 yard line with about 38 seconds to go. BG had two times out.
Instead of using one there and taking a few more shots to try and score a TD or get in position for a FG, they tried to save the time out (why?) and went hurry up. After 11 second had run off the clock, BG got penalized for a false start.
To avoid a 10 second run off they had to use one of the two time outs. This also meant BG was forced to try and make up ground more quickly and on the next pass, Schilz threw that very poor pass under pressure and it was returned deep into BG territory, allowing Ohio to kick the go ahead FG (and winning points) as time ran out.
Prior to that, BG had stopped Ohio on a 3rd and 9 for what would have been a 39 yard field goal. Ohio was flagged for holding and instead of moving them back 10 more yards, BG declined the penalty and allowed the easier kick, which was made.
Why? Did the coaches really believe their defense couldn't stop a 3rd and 19?
Both of those coaching decisions were mind boggling and cost BG six critical points. It's stuff like this DURING a game that gets forgotten often when a game goes to the final play.
BG lost last night's game well before that final drive and Clawson's fingerprints were all over it.

The 3rd and 9 with the holding call was probably a smart move, although I think it was 3rd and longer. I've seen us accept penalties like that and then screw-up on defense. The correct move is to take 4th and long instead of 3rd and longer, because on 3rd and longer the opposition gets another opportunity to either get a first down or get a closer field goal attempt. They could also be stuck with a longer attempt, but do you take that chance?BGWriter wrote:As far as last night goes...Flipper wrote:We play hard...we just don't play well when we need to...
