What Should Be Done after the season?
We all know that something is missing with this team by its performance over the past 2 years. However the team does have some talent and has lost a lot of close games. I want to pose the question of : Which of the 4 scenerios needs to happen after the season.
1) No changes: The team had some tough close losses as well as 2 quality wins vs Temple and Miami OH. Next year is a make or break year for the staff and the staff remains intact for next year.
2) Fire Mike Elko (DC) Bring in a new DC that can stop the run and make in game adjustments to stop teams in the 3rd and 4th quarter
3) Fire Warren Ruggerio: If this happens I believe Clawson will take charge of the offense as he will be coaching for his job next year and will call plays himself. Or he can roll the dice and bring in a new coordinator to revamp the offense.
4) Fire Clawson: Seems highly unlikely being that he has another year left and has tried to do things the right way. However do we fire him now and move in another direction.
Lets hear what you think

Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
I would say options 1 or 3 seem reasonable, but I would lean more towards option 1. The defense is much better than the past couple of years, and definitely better than the Brandon era. This is a young group that is getting better and better, so option 2 is a horrible idea. I only see option 3 as an option if he can find an OC that will run the same style of offense but be smarter with the play calls (I actually liked the play calling sequence last night for the most part, partly because there wasn't any wildcat). My overall vote?
Option 1.
Option 1.

3 or 1
I am no Clawson fan but after 3 years I want to see if he can put it all together as his track record in 1aa suggests. We need to be in the MAC championship game next year IMO.

Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
I actually thought last night was the best offensive scheme we had all year. They had Schilz run a couple times, they rolled him out of the pocket on some passes, they used the TE in the red zone, they used a couple quick end-arounds to the WR's and they ran the ball more.
As with the Kent game, if we have Samuel healthy for the whole game I'm pretty sure we win them both.
I would only consider moving the OC, but last night was encouraging. Let's see what we can do with Buffalo first.
My biggest complaint with the OC is still when we have a 3rd and long between the opponents 30 and 40 yard line he seems to never run a play with the intent of being in/near 4 down territory. I know you can't do it all the time, but I just never see it happen. We always try a pass play that more often than not ends up in a sack forcing a punt.

Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
As frustrated as I am with how the last two years have gone, especially with all of these last-second losses, I am willing to give the staff one more year to fix this.
That said, and to add to the topic, we need to hit the JUCO trail and find a WR or two because the WR position will be our hardest hit on the entire team. Jorden was a huge pickup for us in the JUCO ranks and we're really going to miss him. I know we'll have Michigan transfer Stokes and a bunch of young guys we've brought in, but with losing guys like Jorden, Cooper, Hodges, Hustson and Jones we MUST go out and find guys ready to play right away. This is our #1 recruiting priority right now IMO. And with the way we've thrown the ball in recent years to guys like Barnes and Jorden, there has to be a top-notch JUCO out there willing to come to BG.

Yeah...I was a hothead last night saying we might wantg to make changes at the DC and OC postions, but given time to calm down a bit...I think both units progressed this season and the staff deserves a chance to demonstarte what they can do with a more mature team. The team will benfit form the continuity as well. You don't want to find yourself changing out coordinators every other year....we had that a bit under Brandon towards the end of his run.
We recruited the hell out of WR the past two years and we have Je'ron Stokes coming in from Michigan. We'll be fine there.

I am definitely swayed by you guys towards the side that says keep them. But when I think about the options that might be out there I just assume they will be better for us, probably grass is greener but I think letting him have another year gives us another year of bad football. I don't think things get much better next year because the same guy will be in charge and the same problems will be there. That said, of the three options that have been mentioned all might still be a year away from taking a HC role.

Why are you so set on former BG coaches?Globetrotter wrote:I am definitely swayed by you guys towards the side that says keep them. Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
Sorry thats all that has been mentioned. I know nothing about what else is out there...I am definitely not set entirely on former BG coaches. We discussed this in another thread and they came up. I would also take Jim Tressell in a second.kdog27 wrote:Why are you so set on former BG coaches?Globetrotter wrote:I am definitely swayed by you guys towards the side that says keep them. Not sure, it was in another thread. Someone else mentioned Azzani, I think I brought up Durkin and Stud but was not the only one on either.Flipper wrote:Mentioned by who?....
Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
Let me ramble here for a bit...
My biggest gripe about hiring coaches is the MAC is that you will usually have to go with unproven position coaches or into the FCS to get you coaches.
I know that in certain situations there is a need to take a risk, but for every Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly, there are 5 guys you couldn't remember off hand.
My point is that very rarely will you be able to find a proven coach to take the position. Most of the time the AD's are taking gambles on personalities.
In my opinion, Clawson should keep his job simply based on the amount of talent he has coming back next year. The only position on the field you will see tremendous turnover will be WR. With that, I believe that Stokes, Joplin, and Coby will fill in nicely.
The schedule is very tough next year...but that team MUST produce, no question about it.

Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
Option #1 all the way...Although the playcalling needs to become much better. Coach Clawson was given a 5 year deal. Next year is #4 and the program is all his but he MUST produce the next two years. We're closer than further to being a good team.
