The MAC schedule??? Certainly it can't be as hard as this year! We had Toledo, NIU and Western along with missing a horrible Akron team. And winning the MAC is this teams goal next year as well anyway.mc3022 wrote:Let me ramble here for a bit...
My biggest gripe about hiring coaches is the MAC is that you will usually have to go with unproven position coaches or into the FCS to get you coaches.
I know that in certain situations there is a need to take a risk, but for every Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly, there are 5 guys you couldn't remember off hand.
My point is that very rarely will you be able to find a proven coach to take the position. Most of the time the AD's are taking gambles on personalities.
In my opinion, Clawson should keep his job simply based on the amount of talent he has coming back next year. The only position on the field you will see tremendous turnover will be WR. With that, I believe that Stokes, Joplin, and Coby will fill in nicely.
The schedule is very tough next year...but that team MUST produce, no question about it.

Can someone explain why we don't play EVERYONE in our own division? That just makes no sense to me for a fair representation of a division champion.

#1. He's bringing in good talent and I agree with Clawson in that we are beginning to see competition at every position. I'm curious to see the QB competition next year. 4 talented kids competing should result in a better QB for us next year whether its Schilz or not.

Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
Clawson has done very little to inspire excitement about the future for me. I personally think the game is overwhelming for him. The team finds way to lose games again and again....youth is only an excuse. In all honesty I'd be willing to give Clawson 1 more season, but GC needs to go. Not trying to hijack the thread, but how much more of this BS do Falcon fans have to put up with? Time is up, fans are apathetic, and a change at that position is desperately needed.

Option 3 by a mile.
That would take care of Option 1 and 2.

Your absolutely right - BG have a very tough MAC schedule this year. I was referring to our non-conference games @ Flordia and @ Va Tech specifically. We must be able to pull out wins against Rhode Island and Idaho. (our other two non-conference games, both at home) Hopefully we get some love from the MAC schedule next yearRedwingtom wrote:The MAC schedule??? Certainly it can't be as hard as this year! Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
Basically here's your answer. In 2007, when the MAC invited Temple, the conference went to 13 teams. They figured that teams would keep playing 8 teams in conference per season, and play all the teams inside their division, both of which MAC teams had always done since the conference went to a 2-division format.factman wrote:Can someone explain why we don't play EVERYONE in our own division? Well nobody in the MAC office had the statistics pedigree to know that having a such a schedule setup with 13 teams is a statistical impossibility!
So what they did for the 2007 season was what you basically suggest they should do - play every team within the divisions. But this wreaked havoc by making some teams play 8 total games, while other teams because of bye weeks and other factors got dropped to only 7 conference games. In reality, Bowling Green ended up playing 8 MAC games in 2007, while say, Miami only played 7. The way the MAC rectified this situation was to make the cross-division games not count in the race for the MAC Championship.
As it turned out, the MAC saved themselves from a very ugly situation, but nearly prompted another. BGSU went 6-2 in MAC play under this scheduling alignment, but just 4-2 within the East Division, where they fell against Miami and Ohio, both of whom also finished 4-2. Ohio finished 5-3 in the MAC as they lost a cross-division game to Central Michigan, but Miami actually finished 5-2, having only played 7 conference games. Had the MAC had all conference games count toward the conference title, Bowling Green would've gone to Detroit, and Miami would've been shafted on account of having a 1/2 game deficit because they never played an 8th conference game, despite the fact that they crushed BGSU head to head 47-14 in Oxford. That would've prompted a firestorm of protest on the part of J Crew U. But because the MAC decided ahead of time to only count East games, Miami advanced to the title game on account of beating BGSU and Ohio head to head.
But let's say that Ohio had beaten Miami, not the other way around...Ohio would've gone to Detroit instead, despite having lost 3 conference games to Miami and BGSU's 2. In that scenario both the Redhawks AND the Falcons would've been howling...and rightfully so.
So given all the possibilities for trouble and controversy, the MAC decided for 2008 to go back to having everybody play 8 conference games and having all conference games count toward the conference title. Because of the scheduling and statistics matrix with 13 teams, this meant that several East teams would miss one another in a given season. BGSU has been one of these teams each year since 2008, missing Temple in 2008/2009, and missing Akron in 2010/2011. Most likely, we'll end up missing somebody else in 2012/2013.

You cant really complain about the MAC schedule and being unfair because you really dont know from year to year who is going to be good. I mean we all complain about not playing Akron but we turn around and lose to Kent State. I think before the season started we all would have wanted to Play Eastern Michigan but they turn around and win 6 games already. I mean ball state , Miami Oh , Toledo have all been horrible recently but turn it around and win 9 games. I mean Miami Oh goes from worst to first last year. Toledo turnss it around big time, Ball state went from one of the worst teams in the country to winning 10 games under Brady Hoake, than losing 9 or so games fireing the coach and now they are good again. We just play who we play in the MAC and roll the dice. I mean Buffalo won the mac a few years back when they were picked to finish last.
I think its time we stope worrying about the MAC schedule and just get better as a program. Seems like everyone is getting better except BG and Akron. I mean if eastern michigan can do it , why cant we?

I wasn't worrying or complaining about the schedule. Just stating the fact that we had arguably the toughest MAC schedule in this year.

Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
sportydude, I don't see your logic....NIU, UT are the best of the west and WMU isn't far behind. We played all of them. In the east, we got Temple and OU, the only two bowl eligible teams from the east.
We didn't get to cross over with EMU and CMU and we didn't get Akron in our division. We'd look a lot better on paper if we could sub out NIU and WMU with EMU and CMU and OU with Akron.
EMU is at 6 wins, but they beat CMU, Akron, Buffalo, Alabama State and Howard. Please...give me that slate.

Exactly the point I was going to make about EMU, outside of WMU they haven't beaten a halfway decent team all year. They have one more I-A win than we do.Flipper wrote:sportydude, I don't see your logic....NIU, UT are the best of the west and WMU isn't far behind. We played all of them. This is pretty much a high water mark year for Eastern Michigan, they'll be back in the crapper next year.

Re: What Should Be Done after the season?
I will reserve my final pick until after next Friday. Really hoping we see option 1 because I do see and like the talent Clawson has fielded, and I believe another year of physical and mental development will pay dividends especially on offense.
Schilz HAS gotten better this season in my opinion. He is getting rid of the ball a little quicker each week, and needs to continue to improve at reading the d and his decision making. He's got the physical tools to do the job. Samuel is so impressive and fun to watch. Could go down as the best back since PJ Pope. I like Joplin and Bayer a lot. We lose some seniors at wideout, but we will reload quickly with Joplin and Stokes.
The D is more athletic and physically capable this year than I've seen since the early 2000's. Overall I see the D trending upward finally. Woods is a missile, Jones is a haus, and Gates is a ninja. Bring that secondary along another year, and I think we have a MACC caliber D.
I think people are mentioning past BG people as the next coach they'd like to see for 2 reasons. 1, they're more likely to accept it, and we sort of know what we're getting too. 2, Those being mentioned have gone on and built their credentials nicely.

They forget who is doing the hiring around here now. He gets rid of all the good Bowling Green people , instead of bringing them back!
