Re: Yeungling beer
Kingfisher is also a terrible skunky beer... Had to drink that for my Hall of Foam card at Grumpy Dave's. Literally held my nose to kill off some of the taste then quickly followed it with a Sam Adams...

Re: Yeungling beer
Last I read, Christian Moerlein (which in an ironic twist, was the name of an old Hudepohl line, was brought back as its own company and now owns the Hudepohl & Schoenling brand rights/recipes), had started to make some of their beers (some of each of the Moerlein, Hudepohl & Schoeling brands) in a brewery set up in the old Husman Potato Chip factory in Cincy. They have been working to expand that operation and IIRC, the hope is to have over 50% of their beers brewed in Cincy by the end of this year. (I was reading this back in July or August.) The eventual plan is to get it all produced in the city again, but until they have the facilities, they'll continue to contract it out to Wilks-Barre & (shudder) Milwaukee.RobbyFalcon wrote:I believe only specialty or seasonal Sam Adams beers are brewed in Cincinnati. Jim Koch's dad was a brewmaster at Schoenling and I believe Jim worked there as well. When Jim told his dad he wanted to make his own beer, his dad showed him a recipe the Koch family had created earlier. That recipe is the basis for the Boston Lager.
A lot of the Hudy and Little Kings stuff isn't made in Cincinnati but they are trying to ramp up production so beer associated with Cincinnati is once again made in Cincinnati.
As for Yuengling Light... if you've had Yuengling, it's basically the same. The amount of difference between the two is a little like the difference between Bud and Bud Light. If you're really paying attention, it's slightly discernible, but for the most part, you won't notice much difference at all.
I also agree that Yuengling is GREAT for its price point, but never really understood why it was so hyped. I suppose scarcity will do that. Just like I get a little extra excited when I am able to get my hands on some beer from some of the Nothern breweries I can't get here in Knoxville. (Great Lakes, Bell's, Mt. Carmel, Goose Island, etc. Of course, we do have some very good ones here that I am enjoying too like Yazoo, Highland, Sweetwater, and Smoky Mountain, so I guess it's a trade off. Still hoarding my Great Lakes Christmas Ale though.)

Re: Yeungling beer
Had my first Yuengling Saturday. Impression? It was definitely beer. Tasted a lot like Miller, Bud, Rolling Rock, linenkuegel, Little Mickey's, Buckeye and PBR. Guess I don't have the correct pallet.
Re: Yeungling beer
Nope. A little over four years ago, when I was still in the Air National Guard, I went to a Leadership School to get my next promotion which was at the base near Knoxville. While I was there, I met a girl who lived here and was attending the University of Tennessee. Over the next few years, we dated, and got engaged, and then this past March, I moved down and we got married.Tech83 wrote:WHAT!!!! These days, I am pretty much the only BG fan I see on a regular basis, but I proudly sport my window decal and license plate frame and often wear BG gear to work when everyone else is wearing Vols or other SEC gear.

Congrats! Hopefully you can still catch the Reds on radio down there.Ydfalcon wrote:then this past March, I moved down and we got married
Back on topic- had a Yuengling Lager this weekend. Not sure what all the fuss is about.
Re: Yeungling beer
Just tried Yuengling for the first time this weekend. Living near Dayton, it just recently became available and now suddenly it's everywhere. Gotta agree with most of what's been said. It's decent, good for the price. I'd buy it again over most 'grocery store' brands.
I'm spoiled by being fairly close to Jungle Jims. Need to make a trip before Christmas. Those who have been there know what I mean. They have a massive beer selection, many of them available in single bottles. They're expensive that way, but not if you buy one bottle to find out you don't like it vs wasting money on a 6 pack. I usually look around online for the latest "must try" micro brews before I go and then see if they have them in singles. They almost always do.
Some favs:
Mighty Arrow Pale
Dogfish Head IPA
Widmer's Drop Top Amber
New Belgium's Fat Tire
Steel Rail Pale Ale

No Reds radio affiliate here, but FS Tennessee carries their games on TV, and with the MLB app on my phone I could listen to the radio feed, so I still get my Reds fix in.

Was "home" over Thanksgiving weekend and unfortunately, JJ's doesn't have Fat Tire. Said they get a lot of requests for it, but New Belguim doesn't distribute to Ohio... I remember seeing the Dogfish Head IPA and the Mighty Arrow Pale. Not sure about Widmer's or Steel Rail. But, if the breweries distribute to Ohio, he more than likely has it!able1 wrote: Some favs:

I picked up New Holland's Dragon's Milk, Abita Christmas Ale, and a bottle of wine as well.
Jungle Jim's is always a shopping excursion for me when I go back to Fairfield to visit the family. The house is about 3 minutes away!

I'm heading down to Jungle Jims tomorrow to stock up and try a few new things. Anyone have any suggestions for "must try" brands I should look for? I'm not a fan of extra heavy dark lagers. That's about it as far as dislikes.
Re: Yeungling beer
It's extremely expensive (I paid $12.00 for a 4 pack) but Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is pretty tasty. It's aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels.able1 wrote:I'm heading down to Jungle Jims tomorrow to stock up and try a few new things. Anyone have any suggestions for "must try" brands I should look for? I picked up a 6 pack of the Abita Christmas Ale - it's pretty good as well.

Re: Yeungling beer
Has anyone had any beers by 21st Ammendment Brewery? Melt in Lakewood had a beer that they brew, called Fireside Chat and it was absolutely delicious. I just picked up a six pack of Blue Moon's Abbey Winter Ale or something like that...I will be enjoying (at least) one tonight to celebrate the anniversary of the end of prohibition!

It is very good. Meijer in Lexington had it for $9 for a four pack. The regular Kentucky Ale is good as well.
