Akron fires coach

Post by sportydude1818 »

Ianello is the first MAC coach to be let go this year as he was fired today. It will be interesting to see who they go after.

In 2 years he has won a total of 2 games. Only 1 that was over an fbs team. I am not surprised.

And most of the time the Zips were not competitive. They lost their last 3 games 35-3, 35-3 and 51-10. I think the CMU game was their only close game all year.

I have a feeling Luke Fickell will end up at Akron.

BTW, I haven't been able to find any confirmation Ianello has been fired. His mother just passed away and he is coaching at WMU this week. We may have jumped the gun on this...

Agreed Freak. This is where I first heard he was fired but I've seen no confirmation. Only thing I've heard is that he could be in trouble. Sportydude ... where'd you hear this?
We always keep close track on this board of conference coaching changes. Outside of Ianello, I don't see any potential firings in the conference. Could see Beckman potentially getting hired elsewhere. I don't think Ron English has yet proven he's a candidate for a bigger job but if EMU wins 8 or so next year, bye bye to him. If Solich were younger he'd have been hired away a long time ago I think, but I'm sure he's happy to finish his career in Athens. So ... if Ianello is in fact fired, that could possibly be the only conference coaching change. Just about all the coaches are in their third or fewer year so I just don't see a big coaching carousel this year.

Official now ...
Good call sportydude. Since I despise the coaching carousel, I hope this is the only coaching change in the conference.

Yes my sources were correct! Now don't jump me but my sources are also saying that Tressel is a real possibility at Akron. Now I know they have Tressel as their first choice and will offer him the job however not sure if Tressel would take it. The only way he takes it is if he feels that nobody else would touch him because of the scandal

Good job Sporty...I had a feeling it was gonna happen with all I heard here in Akron. Finally in the Beacon Journal today. UA lost to WMU 68-19 Friday and was outscored 189-35 in their last 4 games. OUCH.

If Tressel goes to Akron, watch out. They will be a powerhouse within 3 years. I said it in a different thread and I'll say it again...If we were in the position to hire a head coach, I would take Tressel in a heartbeat. He will be on his best behavior and he will be doing his damndest to show that he deserves another chance on the big stage. Maybe Urban is just going to keep Tressel's seat warm and he'll end up back in Columbus some day. How nuts would that bet?

A powerhouse in 3, on probation in 4. It's not about his behavior, necessarily, it's about the behavior he allows to happen on his watch, all while playing the smiling choir boy. If he truly learned his lessons, what happened at YSU wouldn't have happened again at OSU.

And if you don't think the NCAA would be keeping an even closer eye on him with a chance to make an example of a MAC school, you're crazy.

I think that if Jim Tressell is an option then we are in the position to hire a new head coach.

How does Jim T find the time to visit Akron? What with all his instant replay watching with the Colts....My, my ,my....Say Tressel does end up at Akron, with the LeBron connection, the Zips would be associated with two of the most polarizing jock-types in Ohio not named Dusty.

Tressel will not coach a MAC team. If Rich Rodriguez can get a BCS gig Tressel will have no problem doing the same.

Dunno BGDrew, Tressel might treat a MAC team like Akron as a temporary home to reestablish himself ... and Akron probably wouldn't mind having a rent-a-coach like Tressel.
