Clawson's end of the year remarks

Post by mc3022 »

If you guys haven't had a chance, I would check out Clawson's end of the year press conference where he commented on the 2011 team and talked about next year

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBE0XMidy8M

My thoughts: I only really listened to the offensive stuff btw,

One of the questions/comments that come up regularly during the press conference was about the offensive line. (rightfully so)

Clawson called this current group an "average to below average offensive line." It sounds that although he recognized the group as a whole has improved, it's still no where near where he wants them to be.

He did mention though that he really likes his young group of offensive lineman. He mentioned Huettel, Piazza, Cooper, Cairo, & Byler specifically as the ones who will be given the opportunities to push for playing time and provide depth for the offensive line next year.

Also sounds like he wasn't satisfied with the QB play from this year either, (lets face it, I don't think anybody was) and that they will have to lower their mistake/turnover margin from the offensive backfield to be successful.

From a WR standpoint, he is very high on Coby, and expects him to be in the starting rotation for next year. He did mention that WR was an area he is going to target for JC transfers.
"Yeah, I called her up. She gave me a bunch of crap about not listening to her enough or somethin. I don't know, I wasn't paying attention."

Chi-Town here I come...

On the defensive side, he mentions that Boo Boo may move to Free Safety.

Listen to the audio track instead of the YouTube link as the YouTube video cuts off after about half an hour. And note his comments on coaches getting fired so fast at the end of his time. Its a really good argument why this current atmosphere of demands on coaches to win right now is both bad for the coaching profession and bad for the game.

Boo Boo at Free safety? Now you're talking....love having a 200 lb or so guy with the willingness to bust someone in the mouth back there... the secondary could be a strength next year. There's a ton of returning talent at DB.

Adrian Hodges left because he wanted assurances he'd play more over Joplin in his final game. Coach said no, so he left.

He talked about the OL being shorthanded...we had three guys who weren't HS players in for the spring. One of them played this year (Wharton) I have to wonder... Why weren't Hodges and Piazza ready? Were they hurt? Piazza was a prep school guy, so I can understand that, but Hodges had two years of JUCO..if he can't help right away ...barring injury...why is he here? Are we being too cautious with Redshirting guys?

For those of you wondering about the impact of APR and attrition...Clawson said he signed the max of 25 kids for three years and still wans't at 85 (the max number of schollies). We should not be in that position this year. From my POV...people make the comparison between Clawson and Beckman at Toledo a lot...Beckman is winning, why aren't we. Look at Toledo's roster, look at the number of 4th and 5th year SR's on that team...particularly on the lines and secondary. That's why they're going bowling and we're not.

This was an odd season...it feels like it was a bad year, maybe because we got absolutely trucked in the second half by three of the better teams we played...or because we hit that dry spell in October and November.... it feels like that, but when you think about it, we were 2 or 3 plays from beating two schools that are bowling and that's why were not.

I tend to be a bit overly optimistic when it comes to BGSU football...but I'm going on record now that we will be at least 2-2 OOC and 6-2 in the MAC. We'll be at least 8-4 and playing in the Little Caesar's or GODaddy.com bowl.....if we aren't, I'll eat a bug and maybe even a Domino's pizza...possibly wash it down with an Iron City light even

Yeah its defiantly disappointing that Scott Hodges didn't play this year. The reason why you bring in JUCO kids is to have them start immediately, otherwise you'd rather get a HS kid in and have him for 4/5 years.

Piazza, to my understanding, will be entering his RS Sophomore year (correct me if i'm wrong) so that isn't that big of deal. To me, Hodges is.

If you recall back in Clawson's recruiting statement, he called Scott Hodges "the best JUCO tackle we evaluated on film." The fact that Bojicic had to rotate to tackle often tells me that Hodges wasn't ready to play, or they liked Wharton that much better.

So I put everyone on the 2 deep forward a year. Did they all play?
