Doyt Perry Statue

Did a little research with a company that makes bronze statues outside of sporting venues.

The cost for a 10ft statue with a base is somewhere between $100-$150,000.

My question would be do you think this would be a worthwhile grassroots project to raise funds for? (Or would that fund raising be better directed to scholarships etc.)

If this money were raised by a private group in a grassroots fashion and "gifted" to the University would they readily accept it?

Is Doyt the figure that should be done or would it be more fitting to do a Harold Anderson one at the Stroh center since the basketball building no longer bears his name?

Am I silly to ponder these things?

Not at all silly to ponder........just make sure the money goes to what it is intended, unlike some designated Falcon Club funds in the past!

Either one of those two guys would be worthy. There will probably never be another like either since college coaches don't stay put like they use to.

Anderson Arena still exists in his honor. Just because basketball is no longer played there does not mean it is not stiil a tribute to the man.

I'd say your first step is going to be contacting someone within the BGSU athletic department asking them if you had it built would they allow it to be placed on the grounds.

He could pay for it himself out of his pocket change. As far as Dayon's estimate of $100-150,000 dollar cost, don't go with the $100 statue. It gonna look cheap.

I'm not trying to be a pain and I know alot of you will throw my comments out the window because I'm a "youngster" who has never been around for the Era of the Greats that went here or coached here but should we even be pondering the idea of raising money for bronze statues for these greats when so many of our facilities still need work, yes Basketball is nice and fancy now but the Doyt has its rough areas, Ice Arena still under its facelift and personally that building can be improved consistently in every area beyond what the plans are, baseball and softball and soccer are all nice but their small so they don't need much but could still use certain upgrades. Sorry but the thought of pi**ing money down the drain for statues in honor of Doyt and Anderson is just preposterous at this point, when the facilities are top notch, then lets honor these men, but right now. No

We have about as much chance of upgrading the "minor sports" facilities as we do building a 25 ft statue of Doyt Perry peeing on a University of Toledo helmet...so the discussion is largely moot...or as Grant would prefer...mute

I think we're already paying for the upkeep (or non-upkeep) of those facilities.

Baseball and softball have beautiful college stadiums, tennis has new facilities, hockey got new locker rooms, the ice arena is currently being redone (it even has it's own fundraising campaign), volleyball, men's and women's basketball play in a brand new arena, soccer just added lights and has a nice college stadium. What exactly do you want upgraded? Outside of the ice arena (which is being redone) what facility isn't top notch for a MAC school?

Who is pissing money down the drain? Dayton's idea is a grass roots campaign for donors to give the money for a statue. Not have the athletic department build one out of pocket.

Baseball and softball are much closer to the bottom of MAC facilities than the top. You obviously have never been to Miami, OU or Kent and that is not even considering the locker room facilities for those sports or the lack of scholarships and budget.

I say this with the utmost respect for baseball, softball, gymnastics, soccer, etc...Outside of nice locker rooms what more do you want for them? You want to cut football's budget so softball can have a bigger recruiting budget?

How many people does softball and baseball draw a game? 50-60? Outside of 1 or 2 soccer games how does that draw 500 or fewer?
