Re: BG Football: FCS or FBS, discuss...
This is all I will ever say about this topic.
If BGSU football ever drops to FCS, I will never watch another game again. If we're not competing in the top level, and drop down on our own volition, it will basically be an admittance that we suck and that we'll always suck. No way I'm supporting a program that sends that message.
My opinion - the question should be, do we stay in FBS, or do we nuke the program entirely. You think people have a hard time caring about BGSU football now? No one, and I mean, no one will care about our team if we drop to FCS. Either you play at the top level, or you don't play at all.

I, for one, will. You know why? Because it's my Alma Mater and I love it for that reason. For the record, I am not in favor of dropping to FCS, but if it happens for whatever reason, I will still support BG and its programs.bgsufalcon24 wrote: No one, and I mean, no one will care about our team if we drop to FCS. Not to spur another topic, but did you happen to watch the DII or DIII National Championships? They're lower than FCS and they had fans there supporting them. Why do you believe that if BG drops to FCS that we will lose all support? That line of thinking doesn't make sense quite frankly.
I know it's not a true indicator, but in my four years as a student, we went to 2 bowl games. That means we had a .500+ season at least twice. That means in some way, shape, or form, we are competing at the FBS level. Acceptable, maybe. Stellar, no. Room to improve, absolutely. Yes, we lost both those games. One we got pounded and one we were screwed on a BS TD call with :34 seconds left.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that this program is capable of FBS quality football and there is no reason we shouldn't continue in that route. Many people bring up good points about how to improve the "product" and that's a good way to start. Marketing is a definite starting point in my book.

I am glad people are watching us on TV but I have to wonder if that 19% would go up if they were watching us play before a full stadium?transfer2BGSU wrote:Remember the college presidents are responsible for us playing on the weeknights in November. And with the Ohio budget situation as it is, all of the Ohio public universities that are in the MAC are going to play those weeknight games because they are helping with our enrollment. BGSU increased its out-of-state enrollment this year to approximately 19%. Financially, we need those students. THAT is why we play the weeknight games in November. Exposure of our universities - athletics is second. It's the Journey... wrote: 3. GET OUT OF THE MAC! We need a conference that will allow us to play football on Saturdays. We can adjust the times around OSU and UM as needed but these weekday games are killing our attendance and fan base.
What other suggestions or ideas are out there??

You are wrong.
I will care about BGSU football whether we play FBS, FCS, D-II, or even D-III.
I would prefer that we stay at the FBS level. But if the budget ever says drop to a lower level or drop athletics all together, I would vote to go to the lower level.
When are we going to fill the stadium in November? On a Saturday? Get real. We are not going to sell out on a November Saturday unless we are undefeated and are playing a ranked BCS school. This is BGSU. Our fans are fickle. It's the Journey... wrote: I am glad people are watching us on TV but I have to wonder if that 19% would go up if they were watching us play before a full stadium?

Those schools that are in the DII and DIII championship games are schools that were already at that level. They didn't drop to D-III just to play at that level. On the other hand, we would be dropping to a lower level to play.musicman2343 wrote:I, for one, will. You know why? Because it's my Alma Mater and I love it for that reason. I would still care about BG football. I just wouldn't buy season tickets, devote my time on Saturdays for it, and donate money for us to compete with schools like Duquense and Drake.

Why not go to FCS? Heck, we already fell through the CCHA trapdoor into the WCHA. We are the only FBS school in that league, so it makes sense for us to stop kidding ourselves and accept who we are now. Next thing you know we will be chasing at a Horizon league invite for hoops.
I have heard bad ideas in here before, but this is the worst! Leaving the MAC and going to FCS would be moronic.

I know they're already at that level, but my point is that if we should drop, we will still have fans that support us. If DII and DIII colleges have fans at football games, an FCS school will as well.footballguy51 wrote:Those schools that are in the DII and DIII championship games are schools that were already at that level. Re: BG Football: FCS or FBS, discuss...
I am thoroughly embarrassed that this kind of topic is being discussed by our own fans right now. I mean, how can I be bothered by other schools knocking us for our apathetic fan base when some of our own fans are talking this crap? I hope there aren't any recruits reading this junk. Maybe I should start a "BGSUCKS" chant on here and we can all sing along together. Or why don't we pull a Pacific and just eliminate football all together, dropping from (then) I-A to flat out nothing. I will email Maryland, Indiana, Tulsa, Idaho and Middle Tennessee and tell them to scratch us as road trips from their future schedules, because we have dropped down below them. Then I can pick Ohio, or Miami, or better yet, Toledo, as my new favorite FBS school. Or just say F it all and become a Buckeye fan.
GO BG!!!

Jeez...some of you need to calm down. We're spitballing the idea of dropping down to a lower rung of Dvision one football....we're not talking about wiping ourselves on the flag or anything...

Wait, wait, wait!!! Are you telling me we don't set policy for the athletic department on this site? Why are we wasting our time here?Flipper wrote:Jeez...some of you need to calm down. ....And those who were should be slapped upside the head for even wanting to discussing it. How about we "waste" our time by talking about how to move up to the BCS level instead of how to drop down to the FCS. Jeez.....Flipper wrote:Jeez...some of you need to calm down.
