And the people asking for a chain restaurant in BG!? Ugh...one of the best things about BG is good local eateries and not the overabundance of chain bullshit that you get in Toledo.
Yeah I'll take El Zarape or Easy Street every day of the week over Red Robin or whatever else she listed.

I love this comment someone else left
I personally don't consider a resturant that serves alcohol a family resturant

LMAO! I felt the need to chime in on the restaurant issue, even though it has little to do with the overall gist of the article.

But yeah, there aren't many restaurants outside of fast food that survive without alcohol sales nowadays. It's just not smart business...alcohol is where the money is. For the life of me I cannot figure out why any BG resident would want to ruin a great little local restaurant scene by making them compete with a corporation. But then Applebees, Outback, Olive Garden, etc are pretty much my least favorite restaurants ever. It's all pre-prepared microwaved crap that they slap a bigass price tag on. Throw in BW3 as well...except they deep fry their pre-prepared crap rather than nuke it.

Between Reverend's, City Tap, Pagliai's, Pollyeyes, SamB's, Cosmos, Myles, DiBenedetto's, Easy Street, El Zarape, and Mr. Spots etc there are some pretty good locally owned restaurants in BG. Sure if you want seafood you're probably gonna leave town (although NW Ohio isn't exactly a beacon in this regard anyways). There aren't any real high end restaurants either, (we had one and lost Cohen & Cooke), but with it being mostly a college town that's expected. Still, if you want good eats for a good price there are some GREAT options. Hell South Side Six makes some damn good gyros too if you're in the mood for carryout.

I'll never understand people's obsession with chain restaurants. I hate them and avoid most of them at all costs. I'll eat (and even enjoy) Cheddar's and Red Robin occasionally, but the BG restaurant scene is pretty special, IMO. I'm quite happy to keep the chains out.

now is Chedders a national chain or regional chain, I'd be more willing to accept something that is a regional chain (like Frickers is) in town rather than national chains

Cheddars is a national chain, but it's a smaller one. It came from Texas, I believe, and there are maybe 50 of them nationwide?

It is one of very few chain restaurants that I will say I actually enjoy going to. It's similar in atmosphere and menu to an Applebees, but the food at Cheddar's is made on location much more frequently than Applebees. It's pretty much a kid food, but they have the best chicken fingers I've had anywhere...hand batter dipped in a beer batter. They really are good.

I still don't want a Cheddar's in BG. I'm quite happy with the local restaurant selection.

So how can the University or the Athletic Department better reach out to the local community?

Do something similar to what the Toledo zoo does. Have a certain game(s) where BG residents can get in for free or half price. It might work.

They've done that for hockey and I haven't seen any huge crowds as a result. The $1 day for women's basketball was pretty well attended but for that price was certainly not great. Last year for men's it wasn't near sold out - in fact I would say disappointing considering the price.

Look at the chain restraunts v. local restraunts issue and spin it that way. Chains have fancy presentation - color menus, advertisements, fancy signs, etc. I think our athletic department is attempting to brand their product with signage & visuals in the Stroh. Now they need to step it up with shameless self-promotion advertisements on the Friday night news sponsoring high school highlights and at other key times. Simply promoting a team that just made the NCAA would be a lot easier especially if they were returning key players the next year.
I proudly chose to be a Falcon and a Falcon I will remain until the end.

Ok, at some point in time the university and community divorced. Well then, athletically do what divorced people do? Come together over a mutual interest. In the case of the divorced couple - the kids. In the case of the BG community and the university - Falcon Athletics. Have a cease-fire on game day; get on out to the DMZ (stadium or arena) and enjoy the game.

As far as student apathy goes. In the old days the arena was a lot like a gathering place prior to heading up town or to College Station, somewhat like a campus mixer. Frats and sororities would travel in large groups to Anderson accounting for scores and scores of people, loud people. That is non existent now.
