BGSU Announces Women's Soccer Coaching Change
2/23/2012 10:24:00 PM
Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University Director of Athletics Greg Christopher announced today that Andy Richards will no longer serve as BGSU's women's soccer coach. Assistant coach Kellie Evans will serve as interim head coach for the 2012 season.
"We would like to thank Andy for his years of service and contributions to BGSU women's soccer," Christopher said. "That being said, it is in the best interest of the program that we move in another direction. I have great confidence in Kellie and her ability to move the program forward through this transition."
In 12 seasons at Bowling Green, Richards was 108-121-27 overall and 58-62-16 in MAC play. His teams won the MAC Tournament in 2004 and 2005, along with a regular season title in 2005.
A national search to fill the head coach position will begin in November after the conclusion of the 2012 soccer season.

Interesting move...especially the "wait" till the end of the 2012 season to "search" for a new head coach. Wonder what has happened to seemingly suddenly cause this action.

Wonder if he'll end up at St. Bonaventure joining a previous men's soccer coach.
Very odd timing indeed. His overall record wasn't spectacular but had some success and seemed to be a quality person.

GC finally found out what a "wanker" is?
Sorry - that was bad, rude, and in very poor taste. I don't mean to imply that Andy ever called him one, either.
(but if he had, he wouldn't have been too far off the mark.)

GC would be very lucky if that is all, Andy or anyone else ever called him!
Matter of fact, I have heard a LOT worse, from MANY people!!!

Coach Richards was always a class act and did enjoy success at BGSU. The last few years have been a struggle...I'm sorry to see him go. He was always prompt to answer emails and made time to talk after games we attended. Best wishes to Coach Richards and thanks for the success you brought to BG.

Seems like a really odd time to fire a coach. Can't help but wonder if there was a specific incident that led to it.

How does this work generally? Do coaches' contracts have a win percentage built into them? Do they get a warning to improve the team "or else"? Or do they walk into the AD's office one day for a meeting and get the shock of their life that they never saw coming? I'm really clueless as to how this part of the operation works in general.

Re: women's soccer changing direction
It works pretty much all ways, depending on the situation. At the university I used to work at we let go of our men's basketball coach and from what I know he was caught completely off guard, as were many people who worked in the athletic department, however when our baseball coach was let go, it was pretty well known among everyone that it was going to happen a good week before it actually took place.Bubba Bo Bob Brain wrote:How does this work generally? Let's hope he and the team move ahead, separately, but ahead.

The answer to this one is simple, but not very clear. Understand the close relationship between the interim head coach and the senior female administrator and you have your answer!
