This might be a little overly dramatic, but the one thing that you can give your fans for every year is hope. What hope do the fans have for next year? 2 recruits nobody wnated, 4 freshman that played sparingly or not at all, losing our best player and having his replacement be a guy I could beat in basketball?

Re: Directionally, Greg Christopher Doesn't Get It
If endowment had been a priority when it should have been we would be there any beyond.
Miami was at 347 million in 2009
Ohio was at 277 million in 2010
Toledo was at 137 million in 2009
Western was at 169 million in 2009
Buffalo was at 429 million in 2010
BG was at 153 million in 2010
Valparaiso = 140 million in 2010
Case Western = 1.4 Billion in 2010
We cannot change what was not done in the past, but I am disappointed the push is not taking place in the present.

Dude, you have no idea who I am or what I have been through. However, I do understand that people get pissed on in this world and that it is a fact of life. All I am saying it is a sad world when I sit around and read about people wanting someone fired. It gets pretty effin' pathetic when every season in every sport people want to fire the whole damn athletic department. I am pretty sure that many people on this board have no idea what it entails to be an AD or coach.BGWriter wrote:The only one who doesn't get it is you. If you want to discuss a world where nobody has to compete for a job and everyone is guaranteed an income and no pain in their life -- ever -- perhaps you should seek out a site discussing a socialistic utopia.BGorDeath wrote:guest44 wrote:Lou Orr got a large buyout from his previous firing. If he is not able to give his kids Christmas, that is nobody's fault but his own. He should have never been extended in the first place. A fluke MAC regular season title in which BG was an underdog in the 1 vs. 8 matchup against OU. The idea that a coach has never had a winning record in the non-conference, got a contract extension is laughable in itself. Greg Christopher has to suck up his pride, and do what is best for the program. Lou won't be able to hide behind the other basketball team anymore.[quote}
Just what I thought...some people just don't get.
That is not how the real world works, and especially not the world of college athletics. These folks make well above the average salary each year to do a job that demands you produce decent results, or that nice income goes away.
Any coach worth his salt knows the risks and joyfully enters into this world.
If he has any success whatsoever, he would be smart to put money aside for the times that happen when that very nice salary won't be there. I'm sure Coach Orr has done that and, if he hasn't, then any pain he may have while unemployed is his own responsibility and nobody else's.
I'm sure I speak for everyone on here when I express my sympathies for the difficulty you went through, but your situation, but your blanket sympathy for anyone who loses their job is misguided and unrealistic.
Nobody is guaranteed a thing in this life. That's not being unsympathetic -- it's accepting the world for what it is.
As for the idea that BG should already have its athletic department and other areas of the university fully endowed by now: I'd be curious to know how many schools with the size and demographics of BG and other MAC-level institutions have achieved such a goal.
My guess is very few.
I would ask this, how many of those wanting Orr fired would have the balls to say it in his presence instead of hiding behind a fake name on a message board. I can guarantee you that the majority would piss down their leg before they would do that. Sign your name if you are going to call out the coach. He at least has the right to know who wants him fired. Plus, I'm pretty sure that if you called to schedule a meeting with him to discuss the program, he just might do that and then you can explain to him everything he is doing wrong. But, then again, I think the size of gonads around here are pretty small.

BGorDeath .... well said. Well said.
There's a reason I keep my name as my username and my picture as my avatar. I am accountable for everything I say on here. I would never stand up publicly and demand a man be fired (unless he seriously messed up in a destructive and damaging way). If there's a 19 year old college student athlete who is working his ass off, you'll never see me stand up and insult him for all the world to hear as if he were a professional athlete. I sincerely hope this community feels my conduct on this board reflects my ethics. But ... no sign of me saying I've had it with this place. I love this board, it helps keep me connected with the Alma Mater that I love, but I just get really annoyed by certain posters, certain folks who need to whine and complain about everything, etc.

My name is Brian Hammer, I'm at almost all of the BG hoops games and know many of the posters on this site personally.
I want to see coach Orr fired. Not because I don't like him, he seems like a great guy. I want to see him fired because his job is not to be a great guy, his job is to win basketball games while running a clean program. He's been fine on the latter, but not done far enough of the former.
The bottom line is in coaching you better win or you will be looking for a job. I'm quite certain he knows this, and there is no reason why he should be comfortable in his current employment given his performance. Unless you just set the bar for BG hoops far lower than I do.

There's no sense in talking about buying anybody's contract out since even if we did have a VP willing to skim the money off of Dining Services, it's not the University's dining service anymore. That's one Peter they can't rob any more to pay Paul.

You are forgetting one "small" detail, that most of these schools that you mention have a 50 to 100 year lead on BGSU from when they were founded. Western is the only one that you mention that is close to us (1903), which not only gives them time, but graduates and the compounding of interest factor.

Correct. Also, don't discount the fact that for years we were a teachers college. If we had a law school or med school, you could argue that there would be more disposal income available for donation.factman wrote:It's the Journey... wrote:If endowment had been a priority when it should have been we would be there any beyond.

As it is, the graduates who have made it big, have donated impressive sums, but there just aren't enough of them.

I was referring to two things in your post - you are far from being a "little" overly dramatic and second, there is no way you could beat Scott Thomas' replacement (or James Erger).
And a B!G thank you to the non-graduates who have made the two largest donations in BGSU history.Lord_Byron wrote: As it is, the graduates who have made it big, have donated impressive sums, but there just aren't enough of them.

I'd have no problems saying anything I've posted here to Mr. Christopher or Coach Orr. And I'll have no problem telling whoever calls me from the Falcon Club (the next time they want me to write a check) the very same thing.BGorDeath wrote:Dude, you have no idea who I am or what I have been through. I'm not an internet tough guy: I'm a BG alum who is frustrated beyond reason at how inept this athletic department has been for too long.
Aside from women's basketball and a few regular season titles in baseball (no tournament wins), most of the sports at BG have been mired in mediocrity for a decade or more.
The last NCAA trip by the men's team was more than 40 years ago.
The last football title was in 1992 (Toledo has won 3 since then).
Those are not acceptable results.

Re: Directionally, Greg Christopher Doesn't Get It
I used to post as "Internet Tough Guy" on another forum. We could form a line around the Stroh Center of people willing to tell Coach Orr to take a hike and it wouldn't matter. It's not our call...it's Greg Christopher's. Unless the wheels completely fall off next year...and if Crawfrod, Kraus and Erger are getting a lot of minutes they might...Orr will probbaky get an extension next year.

Re: Directionally, Greg Christopher Doesn't Get It
This year will be a tournaround year for football, and then GC won't look so bad for that hire. Yes, I know this is the basketball forum. Let's face the fact that this school's Men's team has been pretty terrible for a long time. The only way for us to compete is to convince players to come here. Explain to me why they would want to go to 1 of 345 Division 1 basketball schools that has been pretty bad for decades. At least in football, we are 1 of roughly 120 schools, so our chances are greater of attracting top athletes.
ROLL ALONG!!!
