Heh heh.
Actually, I believe BBBB has suggested several times that GC was hired for his fundraising skills, which may be what the administration under which he was hired wanted. For all we know his contract says more about raising funds than it does about having winning seasons. I don't honestly believe that Hockey's near-death experience was totally GC's doing, but, of course, have no way to prove it. I'm sure they could have saved tons of money by not having to maintain the ice or the arena or pay for uniforms, scholarships, equipment, travel, and staff for the games. For an administrator or group of administrators who don't seem to give a rat's ass about an individual sport, cutting it has to be very tempting, especially if they have a fall guy to blame it on when people complain.
4B has also suggested that GC lets a lot of the little things go that add up to much bigger things, including wooing a relatively small amount of larger donors while virtually ignoring the larger "beer and pretzel" crowd, as evidenced in the golf outing fiasco among other things.
Again, I am happy for and truly respect those who are able write bigger checks to the department while believing that more funds could be raised in smaller amounts if people weren't treated basically as non-entities.
While Bubba etc, recognizes that GC has fired / not renewed contacts for quite a few coaches in the past few years, announcing a "change in direction" for those programs, he is not informed enough to know how many of those coaches deserved to be replaced, or how many of those sports have improved under the new coaches. BBBB is happy to know that at list Curt Miller will leave under his own terms and that maybe, just maybe Denise did as well.
With regards to the secretary, yes, it did rub me the wrong way at the time, even as I knew that all around campus other lower paid staff were also having their positions discontinued. I would think things would run more smoothly from year to year having a the same person in that position from year to year.
I'm sure Volleyball and Women's Basketball learned to cope without the shared secretary, and I certainly hope Men's Basketball learned to cope without her. They certainly have enough people in the program. Some day someone will explain to me what all those people do at the games. There seems to be a 2:1 ratio of players in uniform to suit & ties guys at the men's games. Maybe 3:1. I know, visiting teams seem to bring that many people along, but for what, I ask out of genuine ignorance of the way things work.
With regards to baseball schollies, I don't believe ol' Bubba has weighed in on this topic yet, but he has long wondered how many BGSU graduates have gone on to play pro or semi pro baseball vs how many have gone on to play pro football or pro basketball. Again, this is an honest question from basic ignorance (lack of knowledge, not stupidity), and I'd really like to see some of some fans of all sports come up with a list of names.
I realize it's "only" baseball, but Danny's bio says that "
In 21 years at the helm, Schmitz has had 29 players drafted or sign professional contracts", "
Over the last ten years he has helped his teams to six Mid-American Conference division championships and has earned four MAC regular-season championships over the last 13 seasons. Over the last ten years, his teams have won two MAC Tournament titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances.", and "
A coach widely recognized for developing players, Schmitz has had four All-Americans, two MAC Players of the Year, ten draft picks, and six additional players sign as free agents since 2000."
