It would be a huge mistake for Wright to leave. He's already had to sit a year because of academic issues. His choices if he left would be to sit another year or scramble to find a Divison III school to play this year. Neither option seems very attractive on the surface.

It pains me to see the program go from hoping for an NCAA bid (remember last fall's optimism?) to hoping for enough roster stability to field a team. At the rate kids are coming and going we may need names on the jerseys so our guys know who they're playing with.

Well, no news is certainly good news in this case, for the time being I suppose. If any of you know more information on this topic, please fill us all in. I for one am really, really hoping Wright stays. Steven Wright, if you are reading this post, PLEASE DON'T GO!!! I love what he brought to the position last year in just his first season of action. He had some growing pains, but he's going to be a good one and I would love to see him and Lewis in the backcourt together again next season.

Lewis in the backcourt together again next season.
I still think that Lewis would be better suited for the 3 spot, due to his lack of quickness on the defensive side of the ball.

That said, I agree Steven Wright absolutely MUST stay in BG if we have any hopes of fielding a competitive team next year. Personally I really think we're going to miss Hobson. He showed more grit & determination when he was on the court last year than anyone else on our squad. He combined that with some serious talent and athleticism. He was the best Freshman on the ball defender I can remember seeing; which made him our best one on one defender last year, IMO. He also showed flashes that he would eventually contribute mightily on the offensive end.

Chris will be sorely missed by this poster.

Hammb,

I agree, Hobson was a great on the ball defender. Probably the best we've had in the time I've followed BG. He will be sorely missed.

I hate to broach the topic, but any chances this one, Rosefelt or Wright could be "Academic difficulties"??

I would think Wright would be the most likely canidate of the three, but who knows . . . For now he's a Falcon and that's all that matters.

Just one question for all of you out there

G- Hobson, Kris Wilson
G- Crawford
F- Harwell
F- Moss
C- Rosefelt

G- Wright, Floyd
G- Lewis, Monty
F- Reimold, Soler, Fitch
F- Eyink
C- Almanson, Lefeld, VanderMeer

When you put them together like that it makes for a tough choice which team you would rather have. I just went for guys with eligibility remaining, factor in Mattox and Daliboa and the party's over. With Wright's situation gloomy at best . . . Hobson v. Wright probably goes to Wright b/c he's a better offensive threat. I'll take a good Intramural player over Floyd, so that includes Kris Wilson, SCRATCH, but maybe more towards Team Transfer (yes, I'm biased, that's what makes this fun) . . .

Lewis v. Crawford. Crawford was the missing link last year and his departure will continue to haunt this team. Lewis is a fantastic offensive threat and his offense is as good or better than Crawford's defense, which says something. Montgomery is a non-factor. Advantage: Team Active Roster

Harwell v. the Small Forwards . . . John Reimold by all accounts is a great guy. He's a better shooter, but provides NOTHING defensively. I'll take Harwell who I've only seen shoot at two scrimmages over a one-legged Fitch. Soler is an unknown, but didn't dominate JUCO ball. His "toughness" probably spells Reimold enough to cause Reggie problems. Although Reimold struggles defensively against active, athletic 3's. Ask Markus Austin from Eastern . . . Advantage: Team Active Roster

Moss v. Eyink . . . Moss would play a low post undersized guy that steps out to shoot 3's a la Stacey. Oh wait, so does Cory Eyink. Damn! I still think the staff blew a chance to make Raheem special. It's too bad Raheem never bought a better alarm clock. Showing up 15-30 minutes late on a daily basis is not good, but when it's showtime he came to play. Too many match-up problems for a non-defensive Eyink. Advantage: Team Transfer

Rosefelt v. Almanson, Lefeld and VanderMeer . . . Rosefelt is playing out of position too. Oh well . . . As far as we know the three active roster "centers" are too. VanderMeer is excluded since no one has seen the kid play. Lefeld is ridiculously better than the stiff I saw get embarrassed in high school. If he continues to improve the sky is the limit. Almanson is legit when he brings "it". "It" has avoided Josh for the better part of 4 years showing glimpses here and there. Rosefelt was touted as the best of a solid recruiting class. Those Damn Minnesota guys . . . I think Rosefelt creates match-up problems for all three, but Team Active Roster has more fouls to give and Almanson decides to show up. Advantage: Team Active Roster.

I see a very sloppy game marred with turnovers and fouls.

Team Active Roster 51
Team Transfer 44

But it does make you think about it, seeing the teams up against each other.

I agree with most of the stuff you said but the quote below is what I agree most with.

I think Lefeld could be one of the best centers to ever play at BG. That might be saying a lot but I think he'll be that good. He will be a big improvement over what we have had the last couple of years. He has already bulked up from last season and a year under his belt I'm sure did him well. Lefeld is a very bright person both on the court and in the classroom. I personally can't wait for the bball season to arrive to see his improvement.

I am very dissapointed that Hobson decided to leave the program. He brought a certain flare everytime he walked on the court. He reminded me of former Indiana guard AJ Moye who was a senior last season. Just the heart and the hustle these players bring to a team isn't easy to find. He will be missed.

Isaac Rosefelt, I didn't know that he quit the team. I do know that Dakich basically did everything that he could to get him off the team to get another scholarship available when the Pollitz twins were still deciding where they wanted to play college ball. I heard the Rosefelt was kind of soft in practice and Dakich didn't like that. But from what I saw if he bulked up a little bit and gave him time he could have been a good addition to this team. To me he resmebled Sean May from North Carolina. Not as talented but I guess we'll never know unless he plays against us.

As for Wright. He's digging his own grave. If he leaves BG which I think he will, not many places are going to want a player that doesn't go to class and when he does go, sleeps. His other off the court activities that caused a suspension this year will not be tolerated either. I am surprised that it was tolerated here.

I would like to correct a thing or two . . .

Reimold does give us something on defense. Absolutely everything he has in the tank. The defensive lapses come from his lack of athleticism and footwork, not heart.

John would be a great guy to bring off the bench for 8-10 minute stretches and play upper 20 mins./game. That's what I was hoping for when Harwell came to town. Rotate Ron, Harwell, Reimold, Fitch, Wright, Hobson, etc . . . and get them all significant minutes. We all know this is a pipedream b/c Dan only plays about 6 or 7 guys in any given game.

Interesting perspective on Wright and class. I would have to think that he's on "academic watch" or thinking D-2/D-3 like Cedarville(near Dayton) or something like that if he is thinking of leaving.

It could be a very scary season without Steven Wright, here's to hoping he makes the Wright choice.

Quit Slamming Opie...

John Floyd is going to suprise you. He has a decent enough shot and he works like a dog on defense. He's an big improvmement over Jabari.

Should Harwell be on "Team Transfer" or "Team Academic Disaster"?

I will keep an open mind, but I don't think there are many surprises with Floyd. What you see is what you get. I'm not saying the effort isn't there, the quickness and athleticism are what is lacking, so really he fits right in.

why now?

Post by pardonfan »

My biggest question is why is this happening now? Its almost August. Roosfelt left at the end of the year. Fall semester is less than a month away. It's going to be hard for these guys to find schools and what not. If they were so unhappy, why are they leaving in July? That makes me wonder if there was an incident that caused this to happen so late? Anyone else thinking along the same lines?

There's no doubt that some sort of incident occured. I'm certain what happened will somehow leak no matter how much Dakich doesn't want it to. It's a good bet that these players were thinking of leaving for awhile and whatever happened recently was the last straw. But this is mere speculation. I do know that when one player quits that usually opens the door for others to follow cue.

My opinion on Wright...

I saw Steve driving on campus last week. I doubt he would still be in town if he was leaving but you never know. He is a great player and a good asset to the team. I hope he stays around.

I had a dream the other night...

Post by Warthog »

With speculation over so many players leaving the basketball program, it must have stuck in my head when I went to sleep. I had a dream about the basketball team and who was on it. We opened the season at Toledo and LeFeld was the only player any one knew. The starting five included Lefeld, a midget, a girl, and a guy in a wheelchair. I wish I was making this up but I am not. Man, I sure hope it doesn't come to this! BTW, this motley crew only trailed th Rockets 53-51 at halftime, then the dream ended.

I assure you that if our starting 5 includes a midget I will not miss a single game this season. I will make every home game and make as many roadies as possible, that would be fun as hell to watch. Imagine....a MIDGET playing college hoops! He better be the quickest guy imaginable though, or I'm thinking he'll have some struggles.

Didn't EMU have a midget, or is Earl Boykins considered a dwarf?
