I disagree. The injury is something that is/was out of her control, but the choice to transfer is all hers. I would bet a week's salary (about five bucks) that she has to sit out next year and has 3 years of eligibility left.

I do agree, however, with the part about the NCAA rules. I have no interest in checking because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't understand what I was reading anyway.

NCAA Rule Book

The only reason the NCAA Rule Book is as thick as it is, is because we have coaches.

NCAA wrote a rule that said "You can't do this" and some coach said "But it didn't say I couldn't do that" and then the NCAA wrote a subsection to the rule that said "And you can't do that either". And this went on and on.

I met an NCAA rep one time that told me the NCAA added something like 15 rules to recruiting since one individual has become a head football coach because he consistently abuses technology. So they instituted the number of times you could text a kid - one recruit had a text message when he woke up in the morning from the coach, he would get another while he was on his way to school, another when homeroom ended, encouragement before he would go in and take a test, one after the test, and it went on and on. So the NCAA wrote another subsection regarding contact with a recruit all because this coach would not leave recruits to one contact a week. "The rule never said you couldn't text a recruit" but it does now.

Since she missed her first year with an injury, I think the NCAA would simply view that as a redshirt season anyway. No need to grant an extra year of eligiblity because of it.

The Games That One Can Play....

Post by transfer2BGSU »

Five years to play four seasons

Year 1 - Injured (medical redshirt)
Year 2 - Transfers to IU - must sit out season
Year 3 - Plays for IU (season 1)
Year 4 - Plays for IU (season 2)
Year 5 - Plays for IU (season 3)

She can appeal for the privilege to play Year 2 immediately - citing the medical redshirt from last year and never playing. I believe we would have to endorse her request to play immediately for the NCAA to hear the appeal.

She can appeal for the privilege to play Year 6 if she graduates citing the medical redshirt and the sit out requirement. If she takes a scholarship this year, I do not see the NCAA granting this appeal. She pays for her first year at IU, and I think the NCAA would grant the appeal.

She could also enroll this summer and take 11 hours or fewer, enroll in the fall and take 11 hours or fewer, and enroll in the spring and take 11 hours or fewer. At no point would she be enrolled as a full-time student, therefore she would not lose a year of eligibility (although she would not be eligible for a scholarship for this year)

....but in that case, her "clock" has already started, so what good does it do her.

If she were to enroll this summer and take 11 hours or fewer, enroll in the fall and take 11 hours or fewer, and enroll in the spring and take 11 hours or fewer. At no point would she be enrolled as a full-time student, therefore she would not lose a year of eligibility.

Then in 2013-14, she would be at YEAR 2 with Four Seasons of Eligibility remaining.
