Re: women's soccer changing direction
If a hypothetical former softball coach was allegedly having an alleged relationship with a hypothetical assistant coach and a hypothetical AD removed her from her position, wouldn't this same hypothetical AD be similarly required to correct a situation in which a hypothetical senior administrator was allegedly having an alleged inappropriate relationship with an hypothetical interim coach?
Did I cover all the bases since, after all, this is all hypothetical and alleged with no real proof?
ARE you pondering what I'm pondering?

Well I would expect this hypothetical AD to address the situation "directionally".

Re: women's soccer changing direction
That's a lotta hypotheticals. I don't love or hate Greg Christopher, but ...
Regarding the softball coach situation, didn't Syracuse offer her a six-year contract at roughly DOUBLE her BGSU salary? Maybe GC could've made a counter-offer that she might've considered, but there's no way BGSU could've matched what Syracuse was offering. I'm guessing the alleged relationship with the assistant coach played a part in GC's lack of a counter-offer, but it's hard to blame him for not fighting too hard to keep that coach under those circumstances.
And, people can make all the hypothetical allegations you want, but I'm 100% sure the women's soccer coach is NOT dating the Senior Woman Administrator. Maybe they are friends, but they're not dating.
I think Leigh Ross is a great coach and an even better person. And, I think Andy Richards is a great guy, & I was very sorry to see him let go. But I'm really getting weary of this constant GC witch hunt.

Re: women's soccer changing direction
My bad. Thought that's what this exchange was referring to...
As I said in my previous post, I think Andy Richards is a great guy. He also had some success at BGSU, especially in 2004 and 2005. However, the win-loss record over the past three years was:
2009 -- 5-12-3 (1-7-3 MAC)
2010 -- 4-12-4 (2-6-3 MAC)
2011 -- 6-13-1 (3-7-1 MAC)
That's a winning percentage of 31.7 in all games and just 28.8 in MAC games. If these were the percentages in a BGSU sport more people paid attention to, this board would be full of threads advocating the firing of the head coach.
If 'dating' is not what you meant by 'close relationship', I apologize for the misunderstanding on my part.Falconfrombirth wrote:You're on the right lines.....transfer2BGSU wrote:Falconfrombirth wrote:The answer to this one is simple, but not very clear. Re: women's soccer changing direction
That was the point I was also trying to make in the Gary Winger thread. I realize that women's soccer is not a revenue sport and most do not pay attention to it (unless its winning MAC titles like in 04 and 05). But just because its a non-revenue doesn't mean it should be treated differently then any other sport at BG, revenue sport or non-revenue sport. The results have not been there recently and a change was made, thats what happens in all sports. I don't know if the interim coach and SWA are dating and I don't really care, because if the women's soccer record is along the lines of the last three seasons her interim head coach year will be her only year as head coach at BG.threestooges wrote:As I said in my previous post, I think Andy Richards is a great guy. Re: women's soccer changing direction
The problem judging by coaches records, is that they are often not operating on a "level field" with the competition they play, even other teams in the Mid American Conference. A difference in budgets, facilities, # of scholarships, etc can make a HUGE difference, and this is especially true at BG in the non revenue sports, as many of their budgets and scholarships have been gutted by the athletic administration, while they should be looking at cutting the number of administrators, personnel and salaries that have been added at the top, and keeping individual sport budget and scholarships on an even keel with their competition. It is almost to the point where we have more associate and assistant athletic directors than we do coaches!
One of our past AD's recently told me, that he thougt we now have almost twice as many people (not coaches) working in the athjletic department as we did 10-15 years ago.

This is the internet at its worst....a lot of "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" gossip from people hiding behind the anonymity of a screen name. Here's an idea...if you want to talk s**t about someone, why don't you grow a pair and tell everyone who you are and say what's on your mind.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Re: women's soccer changing direction
Some of the reasons you give are true, and some of it is also due to coaching. I realize that not everything the BGSU Athletic Dept does is perfect. Far from it. However, you can't blame EVERYTHING on the athletic director. There are a lot of MAC schools and teams in the same boat as BGSU in terms of scholarships & budgets. Sometimes, when a team struggles, the coach is at least partially to blame.factman wrote:The problem judging by coaches records, is that they are often not operating on a "level field" with the competition they play, even other teams in the Mid American Conference. Also, in looking at BGSU's athletic staff in comparison with the staffs of some other schools, I don't think there's a lot of fat that needs to be trimmed. If anything, it looks to me like BGSU needs MORE staff in a lot of areas. Just like you, though, I'm no expert at running an athletic department or a University, so how would I know?

However when you do that people find out that you really have no clue what you're talking about and your reputation as an athletic department "insider" gets badly tarnished. Oh, and you look really stupid.
Re: women's soccer changing direction
What's BG's budget situation / funding compared to a school like Miami that fields a similar amount of athletics and also has ice hockey. Western is somewhat similar but carry 3 fewer sports.
My guess is Western's women's soccer team see's more $ than BG's simply because their is fewer hands reaching for the money.
Same for a school like Kent State who doesn't have ice hockey taking up a large part of the budget and only fielding 14 schools.
People want BG to be Ohio State, have 20 sports teams and have every single one fully funded. If you want women's soccer and other sports to have more money and scholarships then you cut either football or hockey and cut 2 women's teams. Everyone gets more money.
However, 99% of BG fans / alumni would take those 2 and run out a women's soccer team full of walk-ons.
