DT is a bit of a worry....

Post by Flipper »

We lost Darius Gilbert to character issues/criminal acts over the summer and this past week Hunter Maynard...possibly the strongest player on the team...hurt his knee and may well be out for the year. We still have three experienced guys in Jones, Oulett and Campbell....but you'd like to have four guys you can run in and out of there. Be interesting to see if they take the RS off a guy like Minns or if they slide one of the bigger ends inside occasionally. I'd prefer the latter over the former...but if a ture freshman can force the issue, get him in there. Whatever the case...stopping the run just became a bit more challenging

I was really looking forward to seeing what Maynard could bring to the table this year. From a size and strength standpoint, he's a legit FBS DT and that is something we've really lacked here. Both he and DE Colvin saw action as true freshman last year and did some nice things.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I just saw the Blade article that talks about Maynard...that would be a big blow, especially with how bad we've been against the run. If Minns is good enough to be in the rotation, get him in the rotation. Minns is the heaviest DL at 317. No more holding guys back building for the future...hopefully the future is now.

Without Maynard it would leave Campbell, Jones, Minns, and Ouellet on the interior. I guess you could see someone like Colvin who is the biggest DE slide inside on passing situations.

Could also see more traditional 3 linebacker sets with Swan, Woods, and getting DJ Lynch on the field.

The only silver lining with Maynard is they will be able to redshirt him.

Maynard is out for the season for sure. He will redshirt this year and have 3 strong years left. I look for Colvin to slide inside and help out , with Royster seeing some action on pass rushing downs. I don't think Minns is ready to go and can use the year to develope.

Stopping the run just got a little tougher for sure .

Minns is 317 at DT!!?? When his technique matches his weight he is going to be one serious beast on the line.

This sux...like 137 said, at least we can RS Maynard. On the positive side, we do have a more veteran feel on the DL and some depth unlike years past. Another guy gets a chance to step up.
