Hypothetical Question

Post by Falcon137 »

Xavier just expelled their best player from school. The University did this, as far as I know the basketball program has been tight lipped about it.

The rumors are that it was some sort of sexual incident. However, there will be no charges from the Cincinnati police department.

Xavier has also had serious issues with responding to sexual assualt / rape cases in the past. So many think after the brawl with UC and the incident (listed below) that Xavier is trying to save face and lose that "gangster" attitude, by expelling him.

St. Louis had a similar situation with 2 of it's player's last year, both were expelled. Kwani Mitchell fought the charges and was readmitted to the university and the basketball program.

My question is; Would you have a problem if BG investigated the incident and then decided to offered him a scholarship?

This is purely hypothetical, I don't know if BG is interested or if Wells is. But, with all the discussion that has taken place about BG basketball getting better and what it would take to do so, would you support him coming here? He is going to wind up somewhere, he is to talented for someone not to give him a chance. But would it be ok for BG to do so?

I would take him. People deserve second chances for sure. It matters less to me what he did then if he is genuinely contrite and if his personality is thuggish ruggish and if said personality would hurt the current team chemistry. For instance Chad Johnson didn't have a legal blemish until recently but he is horrible for any team because you can't get down to business with the circus that surrounds him. If it is rape or murder the guy would be in prison.

Without me knowing what the kid actually did at Xavier, your hypothetical situation would require me to

a) trust the effectiveness of our investigators and
b) the judgment of the coaches and athletic department

Answers:
a) Generally, yes.
b) I would trust coach Orr. I don't know don't know enough about the others to say.

However, if I WOULD know specifics of the alleged incident, it would depend entirely on those specifics and possibly also the kid's attitude going forward.

Maybe I'm just getting too old for this stuff, but I'd NOT fool around with kids who get into trouble at another school. It's just not worth the risk or the "possible" hassle involved... Could a kid turn things around? Yes... WILL he turn things around? Maybe...
Again, don't like running the risk of having a problem kid added to ANY of our programs, but basketball would be the most vulnerable, due to smaller roster limits. :-k

I have no problem with BG adding the young man to its roster.

Case took an interesting turn today, no charges were filed against Wells, many think that Xavier threw him under the bus
