Hopgood Suspended
From today's S-T:
"Hopgood was arrested in the evening of Aug. 17 and charged with sell/furnish alcohol to a person who is underage."
He's out for the Florida game, no word on any discipline after that.

No DUI, no public intox, no burglary, no illegal drugs, nothing worse than just about every single 21 year old college student has done. Not a huge deal, one game is fine with me. Miss a huge game and move on.

He will pull down this university and smear its name in his wake.MarkL wrote:No DUI, no public intox, no burglary, no illegal drugs, nothing worse than just about every single 21 year old college student has done. Not a huge deal, one game is fine with me. Miss a huge game and move on.

Every time any player gets in even the slightest bit of trouble lots of people on this board try to crucify him. Its really upsetting. I'm giving some context here. Given the DUIs by star players at OK State, Michigan, and ND and the drug use of stars at LSU, TCU, and Oregon and many many others what Jordan did is not bad. At all. Can you honestly say you have never given a beer to an underage person?

It was a common mistake, he'll have to pay a fine and maybe some community service and probably be put on probation with the football program. No big deal here.

Re: Hopgood Suspended
I believe this is a minor infraction, really minor, but I love the message Clawson is sending. Far to often in the past, leadership let much greater problems occur and were symptoms that ended up leading to their departure. Good for Coach Clawson.
Re: Hopgood Suspended
Whew! You read in the paper where these situations go VERY wrong all the time. Minors get "hooked up," don't know how to handle it, and someone is seriously injured or killed. Too much alcohol or a MVA. Then we aren't just talking about missing a game or two. Man...
Luckily nobody was hurt and hopefully a lesson was learned.
I hate reading this stuff.

Sorry Mark,
But I (and obviously others) DON'T agree with you on this. And whether it's a "Minor" offense, providing booze to an underage kid IS still an offense that ultimately reflects badly on BG... IF an article was written NOT mentioning BG, it might not be considered as such...but this kid is an athlete who represents the U., in this case quite badly.

Yes Mark, I CAN say that...and stop comparing this to the various problems of other schools. This is BG and IT is mentioned, NOT Ok State, Mich. et al.

Too bad that on every job application he completes, when they ask if he has been convicted of anything other than a minor traffic violation, he'll have to check the YES box and then write down "Furnishing Alcohol to Underage Person". Hope he is not an Education or Criminal Justice major.MarkL wrote:Every time any player gets in even the slightest bit of trouble lots of people on this board try to crucify him. Re: Hopgood Suspended
Geez, I made my point on here just to hopefully pre-emptively stop posts like the ones transfer and 61 both posted. To not crucify this guy PUBLICLY for making a mistake. A mistake that was not ...
- violent
- involving severe public safety to many many others (e.g. DUI), or at least that has been made public
- involving illegal drugs
- a felony (or at least I don't think it's a felony)
He made a mistake, yes, but that does not mean that we, alums, fans, and largely people who do not know the young man personally, are entitled to rip his character apart ... in a PUBLIC FORUM ... where it has to live forever. Seriously people, leave discipline with the FAMILY, ADMINISTRATION, and the COACHES. We do not know the full scenario. We do not know the full story. We know nothing more than a blurb in the S-T. We are involved in no way other than being alums of the university. Let the coaches and the administration, who know the guy very well, work with him on a daily basis, and have been entrusted to handle these sort of issues, do their job. Given Clawson's proven track record, we trust that they made the right decisions. Don't publicly rip the guy. That is unacceptable and uncalled for.
END OF RANT.
