I am pretty sure that whole series started because our intense defense forced a 5 second call on an inbounds at mid court. I have the tape- Michael Reghi's "Bowling Green BEATS Toledo" call stands out in my mind. When I get to the archives (parents' basement) I"ll crank that out and also get a copy of the MSU game for you as well.ZiggyZoomba wrote:That Kirk Whiteman buzzer-beater was one of my all-time favorites too. Ed Colbert got the ball under the hoop and could have gone up with it, but he had the presence of mind to kick it out to Kirk W who nailed the last-second three.FormerFreddie wrote:BG beat Michigan St. in December of 1990. MSU was #3 at the time, but had lost earlier in the week to Nebraska, thus taking a little bit of the luster off our win.
I seem to remember Kirk Whiteman hitting a buzzer-beater against Toledo in either the spring of 89 or 90 that was pretty good.
That whole series started because some UT guy tried to dribble behind his back and lost control of it!

I think Frank still calls Mudhens games on the radio, but I could be wrong about that. Dayons_Den would know for sure... DD?? Have you seen Frank G lately??TG1996 wrote:Is Frank still around? He's truly an institution in Toledo sports!

He was awesome to work with. While I had to show him how computers worked for the most part, he did pretty well with it, and would slip me some cash for dinner every night.ZiggyZoomba wrote: I think Frank still calls Mudhens games on the radio, but I could be wrong about that. Here's some info on his dad... Frank "Flash" Gilhooley:orangeandbrown wrote:Frank is still doing Hens games. He's a good guy, who loves broadcasting, and baseball in particular. I believe his Dad played in the Bigs, and nearly everyone in Toledo has seen Frank's picture of himself on Babe Ruth's lap.

Frank is a tremendous guy. He always makes it a point to call you by name and give you a firm hand shake. Last season during a rain delay I had a very long conversation with him and his partner Jim Weber and also the Blade's John Wagner (covers hens, falcons, and is a former Kent SID) about BG and MAC sports. Frank and Jim used to cover BG athletics on top of the Dave Carr broadcasts.
You can always catch Frank at the Bronze Boar following Mud Hens games and he 's happy to have a conversation with you about pretty much anything. There was some question last season as to whether he will be returning to the booth full-time (he was starting to get Herb Score-ish) but I hope he at least does some games- his style and stories are one of a kind in this era of "boo yah" commentators.

Well put, DD... I was just thinking during the NFC Championship this weekend, listening to Buck and Collinsworth ramble on that no one just "gives the story" anymore. It has to be full of big words and "memorable phrases" and every play has to be picked apart and dunked in someone's personal opinion, and it makes me sick.
And how long has Jim Weber been doing Hens games? I remember him from when I was a kid going to games there.

I believe the Loyola Coach was George Ireland. Just for the record, Sir.

I'd to see a copy of that! If you wach it again, look closely at the BG bench after Whiteman's game winner. You'll see a bunch of dudes in coats and ties at the end of the BG bench jump in unison. I was one of them. I distinctly remember that clip b/c it was my first and last appearance on TV.Dayons_Den wrote: I have the tape- Michael Reghi's "Bowling Green BEATS Toledo" call stands out in my mind. Two of my other favorite victories at AA were 1) when we beat #5 Michigan State and 2) when we clinched the outright MAC title at home in 1983. Then there was the win at Kentucky when our Derrell McLane ran circles around coach's son Sean Sutton. I also remember beating a ranked Miami team during Cowan's senior year. Kirk got in a pretty good shoving match with Wally Szczerbiak that day. However, the win over a ranked Eastern Michigan team when AD stole the ball late was particularly special.
