GET RID OF THE DJ, BRING BACK THE BAND TO EVERY FREAKING GAME AND LET THEM BE THE ONLY MUSIC WE HEAR AT THE GAMES, PERIOD! You will then see a dramatic change in audience participation.
Agree, but part of the problem with the band today is that the person directing it does not understand the game like they did in the past! We need RUIT ("Right Up In There" is his screen name) to come back and show the youngins how it's done!!! (Are you reading this Mark?) Another issue that I have been told about is that the director is told WHEN TO PLAY AND WHEN NOT TO PLAY...which is when they play the stupid canned music! THIS is a huge problem if we expect the band to play at all the appropriate times during a game, times when the band should be playing AZZ and getting the crowd pumped up. Maybe the new Coordinator of Promotions and Fan Experience for BGSU Athletics can help with that! He replied to the thread I started on the BGSU Hockey Facebook page and is interested in getting a Section A reunion together! (Craig, are you reading this?)
This would be awesome!!!! One of, if not the biggest annoyances from my time in band, was being told when we could and could not play. It always seemed to work out that the times when we needed to pump up the crowd the most, it would always be time for the canned music on the PA script. Ticked me off to no end.

[****SOAPBOX WARNING****]People can bash music and the place music education in schools all they want in this country, but there is nothing, NOTHING that can replace the heart and soul that goes into live music. And you sure as hell don't need to be a music major to feel the passion that goes into live music at sporting events. It will always, unequivocally be better than canned music. I'd be curious as to when it became "Who cares?" because I just graduated less than two years ago and still sit in the student section at some games and it's always been "That's debatable, they still suck!"
I hear that all around the arena from other fans as well.
Exactly. I was going to reply with the same thing, but started doubting my hearing. I was at a few games last year and "debatable" was in the chant then. Glad I'm not the only one that heard debatable.

YES! That's another one I loathe. The "They Still Suck" needs to go away. It's just "That's Debatable" and nothing else! Again, I believe another one started by scUM (that they copied from somebody) and we don't need to copy any of their crap. We were the standard in the CCHA before they started winning again. Seems to me that Michigan started all these things the year after they were on the road at Harvard in the NCAA playoffs. And us old timers are well aware of the Harvard student section shenanigans.
Actually, the scUM students that were there are quite proud of the fact that they stole all of them from CORNELL. There was a thread on USCHO some time ago about that.
I believe you are correct. I knew it was either them or Harvard.

Harvard's best chant/cheer; near the end of a game when they are getting beat..."That's all right, That's OK, You'll all work for US someday."

This is before your time but when the band wasn't/couldn't be there we had an organist. Yes, there was an organ above the skate shop. I 100% preferred that over the canned music. Why? He played the same music, for the most part, that the pep band played and he was an excellent organist on top of it! We never did get a good explanation as to why they got rid of the organ.

There was a plexi-glass shield in front of the organ that he used to duck under when pucks went flying up there (which was fairly often since there were no nets up yet).

I think that's awesome and clearly a sign of the glory days of hockey. In fact, organ has been used in rinks and in baseball parks for years before canned music was ever brought in. There's nothing like the sound of those old organs. Hearing something that sounds like it transports you back in time. Bring it back! Hell, I play organ as a part of my living - I'll play it

In fact, the only canned music I like, is the few select recordings of (what I assume is) the old organ.

Re : Musicman rant amen I had 2 band geeks best thing for them at a class reunion no one talks about Mr. Keller's class, or Mr. Ratburn's Algabra class; people talk about football games, band trip and other mischief.

If you guys can get section A to get it together, I'll pitch in to buy a halloween mask before the OSU game ( before halloween). I'm sure that Freddie and FF would do the same.

From what I could tell on the athletic website, the Falcon Fanatics did a great job getting the crowd into the men's soccer game. Can't wait to see what they do for football and hockey.

We are planning to go to the Michigan, OSU and Miami away games. That is if we can find rides, since our budget is so limited, and there are other sports going on. But there will be a presence of BG students at those away games.

The "cya" and "thats debatable, they still suck" chants will be impossible to eliminate. They are pretty well loved by the students. You're naive if you expect college students not to curse at a sporting event.

It will be tough, and it may take time...but it can happen. And I am not sure about you guys, but I don't like it when our student section and school gets made fun of by other people for stealing chants and having bad ones. I've sat by the visitor's fans for about 15 years, and I overhear what they say sometimes, and on more than one occasion, they have been saying bad stuff about our spirit for hockey.

I am also curious, back in the 70s and 80s, how much cursing was there in the normal chant? Not just yelling at the refs or the players, but they typical chant that was said every game.

I heard a rumor that there will be cheerleaders at this year's games.

That's what was great about it. There wasn't any cursing, just really creative, funny chants that nearly everyone in the arena would get in on or laugh at, because it made fun of the other team or specific players on the other team.
