Remember GC's statement after the season was over that the basketball program is pointed in the right direction? I think everybody believes that is incorrect, that we're stuck in neutral, probably even including GC. However, what if he had come out and said the program is not advancing and this is Orr's last year barring a sudden turnaround? That would give Orr no ability, no ability at all to enter a high school kid's living room and promise he'll be there for the student's entire career. Such a statement by GC would destroy at least a year of recruiting and that would impact far more than just one year of the program. Orr has the ability to put together a couple of good recruiting classes here I believe.Rollo83 wrote:Sorry to be such a Debbie Downer here but I can't for the life of me envision Orr coming into my living room and selling me and my son on his being the BG coach for the next four years.

Re: New recruit
Why would he come to BG?
Perhaps he sees an opportunity for playing time early.
Another possibility is that bc ON PAPER our program doesn't look like it's in the shitter, and bc he hasn't been emersed in the daily/weekly/yearly disappoints in the way we have, he just has a different, unjaded perspective.

I would hope when a kid is picking where to play he's mostly picking the SCHOOL and not the coach(es).BleedOrange wrote:Why would he come to BG?

Kids aren't stupid; they know coaches, especially at MAC schools, move on or get fired. So hopefully, this guy did his homework and decided he likes the facilities, what the school offers, and his opportunity -- and knows that if there's a coaching change, it won't be the, single reason he chose BG.

The coach dictates your experience and your success. Why would you pick the school and put yourself in a situation where you didn't know who would be pulling those strings?BGWriter wrote:I would hope when a kid is picking where to play he's mostly picking the SCHOOL and not the coach(es).BleedOrange wrote:Why would he come to BG?

Decent record, great arena. I would bet Scott Thomas success is a big attraction to. You can point to a guy who recently started nearly every game in his career and put up gaudy numbers. That could be you.BleedOrange wrote:Why would he come to BG?

Re: New recruit
I believe Coach Orr will finish out his contract here, which is two more seasons. I'm not advocating that position, I just think that is what will happen.

Re: New recruit
I think he's really only getting one more year...unless the team suprises us. Dan Dakich was an exception...I don't think most coaches want to go into the final year of their contract without an extensioneither in hand or verbally agreed to . It injects too much uncertainty into recruiting and retention and it creates to much uncertainty amongst the players. So...if they struggle this year, I think Orr will be gone

Re: New recruit
This could be true. I'm sure he wants to go into his final year with an extension. But, to get him to leave BG would have to buy out a year of his contract...could happen, but I have a feeling he finishes his deal out. We shall see.
Re: New recruit
I think about posting this whenever the topic turns to firing Louis Orr. I heard last year from a Falcon Club member, whom I'm not sure about trusting, that Bill Frack's donation came with support for Orr that was either implied or overtly expressed. I have no way whatsoever of confirming or denying it. But it's out there at least somewhere. I don't know if this was discussed on here or not.
I think the program should have moved on after last season, but I'm not as outraged as it appears many others are. BG basketball was at the bottom of the country when Orr arrived and he's at least gotten it to the middle of the pack. I can't put a superlative next to the job he's done, but it's also not nothing.

Say what you want about the Stroh Center, but the coaches have only had the place to for one year to be able to use it as a recruiting tool - that was LAST year. Yeah, we were in the process of building it, but recruits need to see a finished space. Yes, we told recruits we were going to build it, but this ain't Hollywood - they need to see a finished space.
NOW we have the best facility in the conference for basketball players to come in and view a game. To see the facility and the amenities they will have access to during their four years at BGSU.
And remember, five of the top six teams in the MAC last year were in the EAST. We have moved from the bottom to the middle of the pack. Now we need to move from the middle to the top. It just might take some time.

Re: New recruit
I couldn't disagree with you more. The last few Dakich years were bad but the program wasn't "at the bottom." Hell, Orr has a worse winning percentage than Dan had. If anything, he's taken over a mediocre program and gone backwards. I don't think we are "middle of the pack" anymore either!AyZiggy97 wrote:BG basketball was at the bottom of the country when Orr arrived and he's at least gotten it to the middle of the pack. I'm not sure you're disagreeing with me as much as you are with numbers. They were #256 and #242 in the last two years under Dakich with a combined 18-39 record. Last season they were #158, .500 winning percentage, in the middle of a conference that was in the middle of the rankings. Don't get me wrong, Dakich had achievements at BG.
edit. Of course my point wasn't that Orr's been great. It was that there is at least a rumored financial incentive to keep him here. Would still like to know if anyone has heard something similar, if it's pure conjecture, or totally fabricated.
Re: New recruit
Ive also heard something similar. But along with Fracks money, ive heard that God has stepped into Orrs corner, promising "The Glory" if we keep him. But this is just hear-say.AyZiggy97 wrote:Rollo83 wrote:I couldn't disagree with you more. The last few Dakich years were bad but the program wasn't "at the bottom." How much time are we supposed to give Couch Orr to turn it around?

Re: New recruit
SIDE POINT: Let's quit deluding ourselves into thinking that the Stroh Center is some tremendous MAC arena that gives us a distinct advantage. It just doesn't. It's an decent D1 facility that replaced what was a clear recruiting disadvantage.
