Concerning the crumbing concrete and maintenance.

Its hard to "maintain" concrete. You don't paint it like wood or steel. You can't clean it and retuck it like brick. Water penetrates it and eventually the natural freeze/thaw cycle does its damage. No one has x-ray vision - except for Superman and Flipper - so we can't keep abreast of the condition of the steel rebar within the concrete. The rebar will eventually rust - the rust makes the bar expand - which in turn puts internal pressure on the concrete. The next thing you know there's chunks of concrete falling off the building.

You can seal the concrete, but that requires periodic reapplication just like paint. However, you can't visually determine when the sealer has lost its usefulness. You can repair concrete, but its not easy or inexpensive. Think of a concrete bridge. However, concrete will get to an age that it basically needs to be replaced - unless its protected or designed against environmental impact.

Think about the sidewalks and driveways at your own home. Then think about a 40-50 year old concrete stadium located in NW Ohio that is exposed to the elements 24/7.

I wouldn't lay too much blame at the feet of the University for the condition of the Doyt. She's a tired old lady whose been sleeping outside for over 40 years. She's bound to have some issues.

Keep the name Doyt L. Perry Stadium. No sponsors. If there is a new name for the field or a stadium wall or family picnic seating, etc, please name it after a coach, donor, community member, etc. The very thought of Bowling Green football being played in any corporate named stadium is sickening. Hearing the name InfoCision stadium, or hearing Minnesota football played in TCF Bank Stadium, no matter how nice either are, sound so cheap.
And I will request the exact opposite to be true.

This university and athletic department are strapped for cash. I don't care if it gets called AT&T Field at Papa John's Pizza Stadium brought to you by PepsiCo with special help from Ford Motor company. Sell whatever you can to get a nicer stadium that costs the students and fans as little as possible.

The official name of the stadium really could not mean less to me. Sell it baby...sell it.

This. Put a statue up, name the field to honor the past. However, I have to wonder how many large individual donors are going to step up for this project. At some point they can't keep writing checks. Stroh Center, Sebo Center, the Bill Frack gift to the basketball program. At some point our large donors have to say, "no mas." Plus, how much of an uproar would their be from students if the university needed $25 million from students? The Stroh Center will be pennies compared to a new football stadium.

If getting a new stadium means were now playing at Huntington Field then so be it.

This. So long as current students don't fit the bill, I'm all for it. Saw today that BG has the 2nd highest tuition rates in Ohio, the school can't afford to keep increasing that every year, especially for non-academic reasons like a new football stadium.

Out of curiousity, where did you find the info. re: "2nd highest tuition rates"? Not doubting you, but I'd like to see the article.

It's third highest, my mistake. BG is behind Miami and Cincinnati.

If we could start new, and by new I mean a replacement of both East and West stands, here is what I would propose.

Start with the East stands. This means complete replacement of the locker rooms and any offices on that side. Put up a modern press tower with VIP seating included and eliminate all of that from the West side. The VIP areas should be built in such a way that allows the size of each suite to change based upon occupancy needs. That will give the flexibility to get donor dollars of all amounts. Also, you can open the suites up to one large room and have space for large gatherings. This would make an excellent revenue generating space. I would not put many seats on the East side, let the press/VIP tower dominate this side. Finally, you get rid of the small "BGSU" that can be seen from I-75 and put up HUGE letters with the logo that can be seen in Pemberville!! That matches the look of Stroh. Talk about a front door for the University!

Again, I would do a complete replacement of the East side. With no press or VIP's on this side the stands could go up farther and become the main seating for the stadium. This allows the place to look full for TV games and those shots will potentially include views of the skyline of the University and city in the background.

I would replace the current light stands with a lower profile option. Right now I feel like those four polls dominate the view. Of course modern concessions and rest room facilities are a must. I would raise the South end with a knoll for seating and allow the book store and falcon club tents above. I would also double or triple the width of the scoreboard and of course make it match the style of the new facility. I like brick myself. I would also make sure the South end zone is usable space for additional permanent seating if needed in the future. I would also make the pitch steeper.

As far as the name is concerned, keep Doyt Perry stadium and drop "THE" from the name! It can be Doyt Perry stadium sponsored by whomever. Again, a pet peeve of mine but we don't play in the Doyt, we play in Doyt Perry stadium! And, the statue is a MUST!

I like some of the links referenced and want to add one more. Illinois State University is doing a renovation of their stadium and it is basically replacing one side of the facility. I have the link below. Their capacity will only be 15K when it is done and I would want something closer to 30K for us but it is a good starting point.

Somegood ideas, but I would think if they end up doing one side at a time, they might have to move the locker rooms and other things currently there to the west side, so they have something to use, while the other side is being built (rebuilt). The other thing that we sorely need are locker rooms for any sports that do not have one currently, incorporated into the stadium. We whiffed on the chance with the Stroh, and Ice Arena renovation and it is time to do something. This would give us a chance to have some common facilities (men's shower and women's shower) and build the actual locker rooms around them to save money.

Or as Brad Nessler calls it in the NCAA Football games, University Stadium at Doyt Perry Field? :vom:

The idea of multiple sponsorships works well in NASCAR so why not here?
Reporter to QB: "Talk about how the Falcons performed today?"
QB to Reporter: "Well, we just had a feeling inside the Wood County Hospital locker room that we were going to have a great day. As we sat their looking out the All-Seal Windows that helps save us energy with their triple pane and argon gas construction, coach was telling us how important it was to win the battle of those Time-Warner Cable first down battles. We had to be reliable, just like their internet phone service, so we just knew playing as a team was so important today. And that team concept was driven home to us when we entered the Huntington Bank Field. I mean, there is a financial team better than anyone we've ever seen, ever! During warmups, you could just tell how our guys were not uptight or nervous about the game thanks to the great night's rest we had at the Hampton Inn. Boy, that makes all the difference there."

Reporter: "It must be great to come home and play at the AA Green Realty Home Field...that has to be an advantage, right?"

QB: "Oh man, you can't imagine how seeing that AA Green sign at the corner of the end zone is just is so comforting knowing that as hard as we have worked in the off-season getting ready for this year, there is no place like an AA Green home. Man, it is so worth it."

Reporter: "It looked the offense was really using the entire playbook out there..."

QB: "You know, the number of plays we called don't compare to the great selection of products you'll find at Meijer, the official tailgate headquarters for every Bowling Green home game. Seriously, if we had the choices like you can find in just Meijer's deli department, I am not sure we could run them all in one season. Yeah...just like Meijer...right call, right time."

Reporter: "Let's talk with BG's linebacker, the real heart and soul of this stellar defensive performance tonight...you guys were as physical as we've seen out there..."

LB: "Oh thanks, yeah, I mean, our opponents had no idea how pumped we were to get that win tonight. And it did get a little physical, I mean, hey, that's football. And that's why Medical Mutual of Ohio is the official health provider of the Falcons. Every play we know something could happen but knowing that we can see our team docs without a referral. man, that just mean we don't have to worry about how physical we get. They got our back!"

Reporter: "Your secondary looked solid in pass defense tonight...talk about that if you will."

LB: "Yeah, our guys worked their butts off all week studying film and making sure we knew what they would do in any of their formations. Our motto this year was to cover their receivers as well as the Toledo Blade covers the local news and sports of the northwestern Ohio area. I mean, it just doesn't get better than that...and I even think some of our seniors, well, I think they will be playing Sundays next year and that will be big. But not as big as the Sunday Blade with more in depth articles and features as well as all those great coupons!"

Reporter: "Gotta agree with you there. This win really puts your team in the driver's seat for the championship, doesn't it?

LB: "Wow...I know. Being in, as you said, the driver's seat is hard to describe. The best I can say on how it feels is like dealing with the Thayer Family Dealerships...the official automotive group of the BG coaching staff. They do it all for our coaches and for as much time they spend on the road recruiting and stuff...they need a comfortable driver's seat for as many miles as they put on. And that one drive tonight where they got inside the Case-IH red zone, well. we relied on our defensive coaches to put us in the right position, just like the Thayer Family of Dealerships will put you in the right car and at the right price."

Reporter: "Great win tonight guys....so will you just relax tonight or what?"

QB: "Yeah...we will kick back with some delicious wings from Frickers where it's about fun, food and sports and I think some of the guys will want to knock some of the chill off them with a quick stop at Tim Hortons...you know they are the official coffee of the Falcons."

LB: "That's right....nothing better on a cold night."

Reporter: "Now guys, one last question. You both played in the old stadium and here you are as seniors in your final year and playing the new stadium that honors the agriculture heritage of all of the area around here. What's it like for you having played in both the old and the new"

QB: "Well, playing here on the John Deere Field is great. Our skill guys really like the new surface, my folks tell me the new seats are exceptionally comfortable and this place is just so versatile. We can do so much more here with other sports. So many options."

LB:" Yeah I agree with all that, too. But it sure seems like we are faster here."

Reporter: "Can you explain that?"

LB: "Man everyone knows, nothing runs like a Deere."

Reporter: "Any final thoughts?"

QB: "Full pull baby, full pull!"
