Play calling versus OU...
Play calling versus OU...
Does anybody think Brandon will use some of his great trick plays against OU or will he play it safe. I would like to see Omar throw a lateral pass to Cole, who then launches it downfield to Sharon!!! What about an on-side kick sometime during the game to catch OU by surprise... but then again Shaun Suisham's kicking game hasn't been really that steady. Any thoughts...

I think OU might be aware that we use trick plays every now and then. I think they will be ready for it like Northwestern was last year. I'm certain they'll be extra cautious of Magner. But hey we do have a few other receivers that used to play QB so who knows they might get the call. Trick plays are great when they work, but they look foolish when they don't. Personally, I'm hoping that we aren't in the position on Saturday where we have to rely on trick plays.

Not exactly the thread I thought it was. . .Let's look at Play Calling in general, not just the trick plays. I thought that our play calling last year at Ohio State was a bit odd. Didn't really have much of a flow and I don't think we used some of our best weapons. That said OSU had a tremendous defense and we had to play it carefule. For the Oklahoma game we have to see that their defense can be suspect at times and open it up a bit more than we did versus Ohio State. . .

I think we'll play it pretty straight. Except for the Magner passes, we have really toned down the trick plays over the years. I don't think we run many more than an average team. Since the Missouri game in UM's second year, we have really toned down the trick plays. We are more likely to grind it out.

MAC Preview
I think we will see some trickery...In the MAC preview, Brandon said they'd be running some trick plays against OK, 5 or more. I think they will be mixed in sparingly, but will be present. COWBOY UP FALCONS!
Run, Omar, Run
Virginia Tech was able to keep their game against USC close for most of the game by having a good mix of run and pass with their mobile quarterback, Bryan Randall. I think we could have some similar success early using Omar's feet to get first downs and running the clock. USC pretty much stopped Randall from running in the second half, which is what I would expect OU to do if Omar gets a couple good carries early on. By that time, though, hopefully Omar will feel comfortable and make some big plays in the passing game.
As for playcalling when Nate Fry is on the field -- kick it to either side of the stands, but do NOT kick it anywhere near Mr. Perkins.

Trick plays, to me, are an admission that you cannot move the ball by running your offense. I hated Brandon's playcalling throughout most of last season. Trick plays when they weren't needed, was what really upset me most. They hurt us in Purdue & the MCB. Its just dumb!

I don't think we gave ourselves a chance vs OSU until the 4th quarter. Our playing calling didn't resemble anything close to what we did at purdue. I personally think we played bad that game. We need to play our game and not alter our schemes. We bottled up Harris last year and made hime strictly a pocket passer in that game. I can't remember a single qb draw or scramble that entire game. It was like he was overcoached into being scared of the buckeyes speed. So I hope they let Jacobs drop back and be the QB he will be all season. We have the talent to stay in this game
