BG Defense....

Post by Falconboy »

I don't mean to a debbie downer here guess that's what it is, but one could argue we have dominated defensively against some of the worst offensive teams in the Mac. I'd like to know what changed from the team that gave up 37 to an average VaTech team.

I know were much better defensively this year than we've ever been in a long time but are we really THAT good? We play a brutal stretch against over .500 teams with OU and Kent to end the season. I just hope this domination were seeing is proof we have championship caliber D , cause I get this uneasy feeling we've been snookered into believing we are better than what we are. The last 5 teams we've beaten including EMU today are not good teams at all. Rhode Island is still winless as is UMass. Miami is the only team we've beaten to have a wins in conference. Everyone else is winless in the Mac.

Next week starts our run against the top of the Mac. Our offense has to get better and more proficient for us to have a chance, because I don't think we can contain OU and Kent under 20 pts which is all we can muster vs such bad competition. Sorry for the rant but I've been looking up some stats today and have to admit my recent excitement has been tempered a bit as it seems our defensive stats we've been putting up might be misleading. I guess we all know one way or another starting next week.

EMU's offense has been unstoppable recently and we held them to 3 points. That should tell you your whole story.

Oh ... and that team down south just beat OU and their offense was rarely stopped. We stuffed their offense. All game.

OU had problems until late moving the ball on that team down south. We beat them by 25 points.

I think our defense is just fine and our team will do just fine next week.

Over our five game winning streak we've given up 33 points. It doesn't matter who is playing who, that is an impressive stat to say the least. Even against Florida we held them until the fourth quarter and the only team to hold Toledo to less points was Arizona.

So, no. I have absolutely no concerns about our defense and I think they are easily one of, if not the top D in the MAC without question.

Kent State got hammered by Kentucky (currently 1-8) early season. It's their only loss. They also confidently took out #15 ranked Rutgers tonight. A lot of growth and realization can happen in a few weeks.

For now I'm chalking our defensive struggles to lack of rhythm/experience in early season. We are certainly capable of executing at a high enough level to tame most offenses. We shut out UMASS, held Akron and EMUs explosive offenses down, and held Miami's Dysert to a very poor performance. Whether or not it will hold up against OU, Kent, and Buffalo remains to be seen, but honestly I feel confident they'll give us a fighting chance.

The offense, on the other hand...

That right right there is a problem. Will our D be dominant enough to beat OU and Kent with our poorly performing offense. One could say that our running game is great but I think the teams we've excelled at running at have been horrid vs the run. We haven't faced an even average defense these past 4 or 5 games. Can we really run on OU and Kent or Buffalo? I fear that if this offense don't get it in gear fast our D will end up being on the field way more than they ought to vs a good team and it will bite us in the end. Defense does win championships but I don't believe any team has won a championship with horrid offense either.

Holy crap! We held a bad team to three points! Our defense sucks!

If we beat a good team by one point, our offense would suck.

People just need to STFU and be happy we beat the team we were playing.

As Clawson said in his post game, "the object is to score more points than the other team. That's what we did."

These negative threads must be infecting the cheap seats. Every missed tackle - even if 5 falcons were there to clean up 2 yards later - brought groans in my area. Last year to this year has been a wonderful improvement regardless what happens the rest of the way. Wish we could sweeten the orange koolaid a little better for negativity.

After reading your messages for YEARS I have no fu**ing clue what you expect from any one team.

We're riding a win streak and second in the East with the no. one ranked defense (by over 60 yrds a game!) in the conference. That's not good enough? We have size and athleticism on both sides of the ball. Last year this team would have you doing the knuckle shuffle over the gawddamned media guide!

Falconboy for years bitched about our D line not being 7 feet tall and 400 pounds across the line so we'll never be good enough.

I hate five game winning streaks, dominate defensive performances, and being bowl eligible. I wish were were 2-10 again like in 2010

BTW, 4 home wins this year is more than the past 2 years combined....with 2 home games remaining. Bowl eligible for the first time since '09. Best defense in 15 years. All-American DT, one of the most accomplished linebacker in BG history, playmakers galore in the secondary.

There's just so much to bitch about right now.

Here's a few fun stats. During the 5 game win streak...BG's defense has scored as many TDs (3, Gates, Woods, Jones) as their 5 opponents have.

In the 2nd half of games those 5 teams have scored 6 points in the 2nd half. 6 effin points!!! 6 points in 10 quarters. And people are bitching.

I suppose Falconboy would only be happy if every game was 70-0.

When was the last time the defense gave up a touchdown?

Let's not forget the VT game. Almost the entire first quarter the defense stifled that VT team. It took being on the field the entire quarter against VT to wear out our D. The score of that game did not tell the story of how good the D is. I was in Gainesville for the first game too. D was bad AZZ. I can't for the life of me figure out where the doubts are coming from. The D is absolutely incredible. They are playing a style of football I have been dying to see since I first started following the team in 2003. We have a thing of beauty right now. Absolutely a joy to watch. How many freaking sacks did we have yesterday? Just awesome.
Yeah right girl!
