Pre-Season polls: BG cross country teams at bottom
Pre-Season polls: BG cross country teams at bottom
What the heck has happened to cross country at BG? The polls are out predicting placement for this season, and both the men's and women's teams are picked at the bottom of the league.
These sports are a part of those that help you gauge whether an athletic department is good or not. It's bad enough when most of your major sports struggle, but when almost all of your minor sports are at the bottom of the league standings, there's a leadership problem.
I don't expect every sport to win a title at BG, but I see no reason why most of them can't at least be competitive.
For several years now, it seems whenever I look at sports standings (aside from women's basketball and baseball on occasion) BG is typically at or near the bottom.
Our AD is not doing his job -- but I'm guessing that's not news to most BG fans.

You can't recruit much of a Men's XC team without a track team. We might as well drop Men's XC and pick up something else if we aren't ever going have a track team again.BGWriter wrote:What the heck has happened to cross country at BG? As for the women, there are top notch high school teams that could beat them and that is sad.

Xcountry is dirt cheap to operate. A lot of schools do this and the men compete in track askdog27 wrote:You can't recruit much of a Men's XC team without a track team. "open" runners. The team still vounts toward the six? Required sports in the MAC and you only need one coach for track, and m and w x-country.
Re: Pre-Season polls: BG cross country teams at bottom
I realize that, but we are basically fielding a sport just to field a sport. Seems stupid to have a sport we will never even have a realistic shot of finishing in the top half of the conference. Men and I think the women having been finishing dead last or close to it for quite some time.h2oville rocket wrote:Xcountry is dirt cheap to operate. Re: Pre-Season polls: BG cross country teams at bottom
Your AD just hired a coach who was highly respected in the small college ranks. Track team will surprise folks when the redshirts from last year return a year stronger and hungry to compete. X-country will take longer- we have run our second seven against BG for several years at the Brodt and shut out your top runners. Very ugly, but Toledo is a very deep Top 25 team in women's x-country. I really believe that in three years BG will be near the middle of the MAC pack.kdog27 wrote:h2oville rocket wrote:Xcountry is dirt cheap to operate. Re: Pre-Season polls: BG cross country teams at bottom
Well, here's your answer- running a team that consisted of 7 freshmen, a so and a jr BG finished 8th with their top runner, a freshman, finishing 22. Not as though they'll challenge for the MAC title soon but this is an enormous improvement over years past and clearly the new coach can recruit. This is a very young team who may make some noise in two years.
Re: Pre-Season polls: BG cross country teams at bottom
Yes 8th is a nice improvement but the men finished in 9th (out of 9) by a lot. I'm OK with the women having a team because they actually have a track program, but the men show no hope and probably have no hope of ever being good.

Re: Pre-Season polls: BG cross country teams at bottom
Well, your women DIDN'T really have a track program until now. They were pretty bad-your AD made another great decision in hiring the new coach and BG will show substantial improvement this year. Jeanette Pettigrew, who has a brother who plays some sport for BG as well, will get points in the MAC this year coming off a redshirt season. I know a guy who helps train her and he says she's a beast. Snelling has already brought in several transfers who should help as well and BG usually has some bigs that get points in throwing events, an area in which I'd like to see Hadsell expand.kdog27 wrote:Yes 8th is a nice improvement but the men finished in 9th (out of 9) by a lot. Its hard for men to compete without having track to look forward to. Hadsell, UT's coach, is a great developer of distance talent and he's taken mediocre HS runners and got the best out of them on the men's side. I suspect Snelling will do the same.

It looks like we have two new assistants for the Men's/Women's Track and Field/Cross Country program. Seems like the department is making a commitment to moving the program in a successful direction.

Interesting how a new coach is brought in and AFTER his first Fall he is given two new assistants. Think if he had them all year it might of helped with recruiting and coaching........... just a thought.

It might have something to do with the budget and the fiscal calendar as opposed to the seasonla schedule
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Pre-Season polls: BG cross country teams at bottom
Just as an FYI, the cross country/track program was not given two new assistants after the fall season. Two assistant coaches left for other opportunities just before the fall season began. With the start of the season and the time it takes to interview and hire new assistant coaches, those positions were not filled until the cross country seasons were basically over.

You and your facts!! We all know you are covering for the AD. He forced those assistants out and that is why the coach had to go it alone this fall. IT'S ALL GC'S FAULT!!!!!
