Please, everyone who has a problem with the word "Jack-Ass," read this blog:
http://mgoblog.com/category/user-tags/hockey-chants
This is a blog discussing Michigan hockey chants. At Bowling Green, we say "Jack-Ass." At the University of Michigan, this is their chant when an opponent goes into the box: (Warning, Extremely Vulgar Language) "SEE YA, CHUMP, DICK, WUSS, DOUCHEBAG, ASSHOLE, PRICK, CHEATER, BITCH, WHORE, SLUT, COCKSUCKER." I am not promoting this, I just want everyone to be aware that compared to other schools, Bowling Green student section is pretty conservative. Also, I want everyone to take note that no where on that blog, is there one about "They still suck." We didn't steal that from Michigan... You may not like it, but it isn't stolen from them.

I've been to Yost three times and don't remember the referee one for when they come out. I really like that one. I'll have to listen for it at the game on the 21st.

As for the whole original chant/stolen chant I'll stand by my own philosphy, its 2012, no one is creative, and everything is stolen from someone else

You're citing one blog post from one poster from 2010 referring to one game with Michigan State. Are you sure they say all that after every penalty in every game?

I've been involved in starting many hockey chants back in the day and I'm pretty sure that after the first or second curse word it would just sound like a bunch of garbled nonsense.

But I could be wrong. Although I was at the UM-BG game last year at the Joe and I don't remember anything quite that elaborate.

From what I've been told from friends of mine who have been to the Yost many more times then I have their penalty chant is a bunch of profane words like that. Times I have been at Yost it does sound like a bunch of garbled nonsense after the cya

When we were there for the post-season in 2011, I picked out a couple of those words, but overall it does sound like garbled noise.

There is a Youtube video of them doing it and it literally just sounds like a bunch of jumbled garbage. Also, I think, again I say think, they made them quit saying it and started throwing anyone out who said that. I'm just trying to create some peace between the student section and the alumni/ community members. I just wanted to make the point of saying that we could be a lot worse, but I don't intend that on ever happening.

I have been in the UofM student section a number of times, as well as other sections at Yost. Each year the student section adds a new word to the chant. The band plays a song over the chant to disguise what is being said; the rumor is that students caught doing this chant will face some sort of punishment from the University.

Some of the UofM chants originated at Cornell to my knowledge, at least thats what I was told by someone. The UofM student section really helps lead a lot of whats taking place in that arena, they are extremely creative and often have chants that support various players on their team. They signal the band when they are ready for a particular song, and in my opinion are probably one of the better fan sections in all of college sports. Its good to see our students making an effort to create their own experience, and alums getting involved in that process as well. Harvard has the most creative chant that I have heard, but UofM as of right now, has the best student section. North Dakota and some others may have a better fan base though.

We are working very hard to make our student section one of the best in college hockey. It will take some time, but we are doing our best to get there.

I can not say that shocks me, I can imagine that the Ivy League schools would have some creative ones, especially for when playing one another

Can somebody please explain something to me?

Why on earth do we boo the refs as they come onto the ice?? That makes no sense whatsoever. You want the refs to be on your side, not against you.

They are going to make calls for you and calls against you either way. We do it just because it gets the energy going before the period starts. Plus, it is fun messing with the referees, we don't care if they like us or not.

That is what I always say when I give them a nice little golf clap when they come out

The louder the booing, the bigger the smile on the officials faces.

So true. We actually were telling one of the officials he needed to smile and we actually got a grin out of him.

fwiw, it's pretty much the same in all of the venues, not just BG. It's more of a hockey tradition than anything else. The zebras expect it.
