OU fans frustrated with "Buckeye Wannabes" too

Post by bg1984 »

I was checking out Bobcat Attack and found this thread discussing the scores of people who attended another university yet dress in Buckeye garb and say "we're going to beat UM". http://www.bobcatattack.com/messageboar ... &PID=89334. I'd say that most of us share their frustration. For them Its even worse by sharing "Ohio" This is a phenomenon that just mystifies me. What possible "logical" explanation can someone who attended BG or Miami or OU or Kent give for wearing an OSU jersey and running around on a Saturday afternoon screaming "we won!". I understan someone who never attended college choosing to root for OSU but otherwise I just say "what?". When my workplace pulls that stupid "dress for the OSU/UM game I ALWAYS wear my BG stuff and when asked who I'm pulling for its always "the Falcons!" That's such an easy call!

I hear ya! Can't stand it at all. In fall 2008 I was interning at an office in Findlay and they had an OSU/UM day, called College Football day. The assumed that there are only two possible favorite teams, so when I showed up decking the orange and brown I definitely got some looks.
In my current office, I've started something where many of us developers wear our college colors on Friday. I always have a BG polo on Friday, and two of our guys are Penn State guys who always deck out in Blue and White for the game. School pride, regardless of the school, is contagious.
My girlfriend went to UVA and since she has seen how much I love Bowling Green, how much of everything I do is orange and brown, she has in a way rediscovered her love of UVA. She finds herself wearing more orange and blue and bringing up UVA more often than before. Contagious I swear.

Here in Michigan the people who fawn over UM even though they never went there or anything are called "Walmart Wolverines"..... I really don't care what other peoPle want to do. I'm a BGSU alum and fan and the rest of the world can go get f***ed for all I care... :)

It's easy to see why they do it. Those teams are perennial winners with national championship implications on every game. MAC schools never fall into either of those categories. I'm not supporting the thought process, just explaining it.

A school has the mascot named after a buckeye!? A poisonous nut!? That's just silly.

Most people who attend MAC schools in ohio or any school in ohio are ohio state fans? or other BCS team fans. I think its dumb you actually get mad about that. It's a different level of football when talking ohio state than BG? Most people in Ohio are OSU fans but go to other schools for academics, or because they couldn't attend OSU, not because they want to like that universities football team.

+1 :supz:
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I wanted to slap people I didn't know when I ended up chit-chatting about college football when I was in the area. When people asked if I was for Ohio State or Michigan, and I said neither, the conversation immediately de-faulted to Notre Dame, as in if you're not an OSU or UM fan you must be for Notre Dame. Duh, right?

When I explained my only team was, hi, my actual alma mater, they treated me like my BGSU fandom was some kind of act of charity. Like I was sacrificing liking a "worthy" team to help the little engine that could. Man that really used to piss me off.

This. Can't wait to use it on someone. I'll be in Columbus the night before the Michigan game after BG plays. That should be a good time for it.

When was the last time that Michigan played in a game that really, truly mattered? I could not tell you.

The last time they played a game with NC implications was in 2006.

And as for Notre Dame...they weren't even good, at all, between 2006 and 2011. There were years, especially 2007-09 when BG would've wiped the floor with ND. At our hockey games with ND, the student section would always chant "let's play football" clap clap clap clap clap.

I would definitely call just about every Michigan / Notre Dame game one that truly matters. It's the top two programs in all time wins, all time win percentage, and two of the biggest and most loyal fanbases ... even if they're annoying as all hell. 2009, for example. Michigan finished the season with a losing record, but beating Notre Dame in such dramatic fashion put Tate Forcier on everybody's radar. Meanwhile, ND started as a preseason BCS favorite and Michigan showed how hollow the Irish D really was. ND got exposed in the secondary and ultimately finished just 6-6 with a late season collapse and gave their coach millions of dollars and a pink slip. I'd say that really matters. Then take 2010. Kelly's first year as a ND head coach and RichRod is considered on the hottest seat in the country. Denard Robinson became an instant household name by torching their defense for around 400 total yards and is instantly the Heisman frontrunner. If he didn't have so many injuries and if Michigan had a better defense, that team probably would have won 10 regular season games instead of 7 and Denard Robinson probably wins the Heisman (yeah, woulda coulda shouda). I'd say that game really mattered on the national stage.

But I guess it really depends on what you consider to be a game that really truly matters. Is it one that has clear national championship implications? Or one that has implications on the program? Because if you say the latter, I could name a ton of games for both teams that really truly mattered in the last six years.
