Recruits according to Foxsports

Post by BelieveNBG »

We are ranked 91 in recruiting:
http://scout.foxsports.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=14

and here is the list so far:
http://scout.foxsports.scout.com/a.z?s= ... 08&yr=2005

Although, I could care less about their rankings. I wonder where our last 3 classes were ranked? Bet we beat the odds with those recruits. :supz:

This is why I don't pay much attention to the recruting stuff. It's a crapshoot if you ask me. If those rankings were accurate Texas would probably 10 national championships since 1985.

It's a worthless ranking. Check both of your links. They have us at #91, but they also only have us with 6 verbals. Each recruit is given a point value based on their star rating, then the points are added up to create the rankings. If you only have 6 verbals you aren't going to be very high even if those are the top 6 guys in the country.

Recruiting services are pretty much crap. They're worse than crap if you want info on the MAC and other mid-majors.

Just remember, Omar Jacobs was rated at best a 3-star out of high school and is now one of the best quarterbacks in the country. The teams at the higher end of this rating all have over 10 verbals. Did you notice Fresno State is ranked right along BG. All this recruiting evaluation stuff is so much guesswork. It is the individual player and the coaching he receives that will determine how good a player he becomes.

I would like to see these same recruiting services do a follow up after the player's have completed their careers. Omar would be a 5-star as would every single MAC player who is now in the NFL.

A 3 * QB ranked #51 at his position is a HUGE "get" for BG. I would bet we haven't gotten a player ranked that highly before Omar. I'd have to look back, but I bet we haven't gotten a player with that pedigree since either. Turner was highly rated, but I'm not sure he was that highly thought of coming out of HS.

Either way I don't put any stock in these things anyways. You cannot tell me there are 50 QBs who you'd rather have than Omar right now...and that's just his class!

As I alluded to earlier, that list is based more on # of recruits than quality; and they have us with only 6 verbals. I'm confident we'll sign more than 6 players next week, so its really irrelevant.

The same people had Turner rated *** stars and ranked him at #51 amongst QB's. (odd coincidence....) I think Phil Steele had Turner somewhere in the mid 30's.

If you look at Rivals100.com, they rate Omar at 52nd in the nation at QB. Whereas they rate Benjy Kennedy at 32 and Turner at 25th. So yeah, we do get some "highly' rated recruits other than Omar. I kind of take this all with a grain of salt especially since All-American Freshman Korey Lichtensteiger was not rated, nor PJ Pope. So use it as an informational source that can predict talent about as well as I can sew.

I really wish we could see their faces when they realize how lousy a job they do at this whole recruiting thing.

Here is a Def End/Tackle (6'1", 255lbs) that is supposed to be visiting this weekend. He was Iowa last weekend.

It's probably too early to really say, but based on the info I'm getting, the Foxnews report is probably right on target. Schools like Ball State, Akron, certainly NI and Toledo, are brining in better athletes. It ain't over, however, until the Fat Lady Sings!

You saw on a previous post that the ranking for Kory Lichtensteiger was a 2-star coming out of high school. That is what most if not all of the verbals BG has for 2005 are ranked by Rivals. If these 2-star kids we have committed now turn out to be as good as Kory has become then we have nothing to concern ourselves about.

If Akron, Ball State and some others end up with better classes than BG I will be surprised. On one hand there is the attractive aspect of being able to play earlier that some of these schools can offer but most kids want to win and BG is a proven winner. I believe there is such a small difference between a 4-star talent and a 2-star that coaching, physical maturity, opportunity to play and other variables can make a huge difference in how a player turns out. I wonder how many kids fall for the alure of being wooed by a big-name school and spend their entire career sitting on the bench behind some high school All American. Had they been more realistic about themselves they might have gone to a mid-major school where their talents could have been more fully developed, and they may have played more.

It was said that Woody Hayes used to recruit players he knew would likely never play for Ohio State just to make sure they didn't end up playing for one of his rivals.
